Do I need a preamp?

Silly question time:
I have a piezo pickup in my banjo-uke, like it so much that I bought another for my banjo. Heres the question part, do I need a pre amp for this application? Im using a fender deluxe reverb amp and I think it sounds pretty good, but other folks insist that I need a pre amp.

Maybe it would sound even better?

  • generally yes,but you can get lucky with piezo's,many variables, but sometimes they just work well, either luck or good judgement,i rarely use piezo's now,but i added one to a strumstick i made as an afterthought almost, just for variety, plugged it into my shop amp,and it screamed and wailed like you wouldn't believe, was very disapointed, played it for a few weeks accoustic, great fun, then 1 day i plugged it into my 'better' amp inside,[orange ldx 20],was stunned with the sweet accoustic amplification, probably doesn't really help you but thought i'd share

  • Preamps make a piezo sound better, but you have to make space for the preamp and the battery for it which is why some people go the passive circuit route.
