I'm new here, and not much of a musician, but just got inspired by this guy:
I was so amazed by the sound and inspired by it's simplicity that I wrote up a little how-to book for making the instrument. You can download it free in pdf format at handprintpress.com, or buy it in paperback for $10. I posted a blog somewhere here, but haven't quite figured out how to point you to the right place.

Those are not fretted like dulcimers. I'd call it more of a 3 string banjo. They are cool though.
You can fret 'em any way you want -- I think Shirley's may have the dulcimer fretting (mine does). But Ray makes all kinds of instruments all kinds of ways -- cardboard guitars and fiddles, guitars (and banjos) from gourds, etc.
