I have been looking around the internet for info on making a small amp. I've found the schematic for the little one that takes a 9 volt battery. It looks doable, although I have done anything electronical since I was in the service in the early 60's. The only real tutorial I can find on it is in the Make mag (I think that is the name) and I don't want to spend $34.95 just to get that one tutorial I want. Anyone know where there are some tutorials on making this amp or other simple small ones?

Any idea how long a nine volt battery will run this one?

You might want to use 6 AAs instead. Should last a lot longer. That seems to drive my mini-cube forever.
Paul, There are many simple small amps that are easy to build. Google is your friend. Check out the Ruby amp at http://runoffgroove.com/ruby.html. You can also purchase a kit like this one http://store.qkits.com/moreinfo.cfm/QK17 for about $8 plus shipping. I have built many of those kits and they work great. You will get a pretty long time (several+ hours) on a nine volt. You can also use 4-6 AA batteries as this amp will run fine on 6-12VDC. Hope this helps.
Hey Paul!

I built the MAKE amp last year and, quite frankly, the info in the magazine was minimal, at best. The circuit is the "Little Gem" on the Runoffgroove site (see above). If you can read a schematic (I can't) you shouldn't have any trouble putting it together. I found a link to a layout diagram on the MAKE site by working down the forum posts relating to that topic.

I really like my Little Gem -- right now I've got it pushing 2 six inch car stereo speakers I salvaged from a dumpster. I run it, when not on battery power, with a 12-volt wall-wart. That said, if I were to do it all over, I might try building the Noisy Cricket amp on the Beavis Audio site.

here: http://www.beavisaudio.com/Projects/NoisyCricket/

It's similar to the Little Gem, but it's also got a built in preamp, along with a simple tone-control knob.

Thanks for the great info. I am stoked! It will be a little while but I will build one. Someday I want to buld an AC one and put it into this radio cabinet. I just think it would be neat. This is about 31mm tall. Think I said that correctly, I'm trying to learn the metric system.
31 mm is about an inch and a half. You probably meant 31 cm which would be a foot and a few inches.

BTW, there's a lot of amp info HERE
Thanks Doc. I knew I get it wrong! Really got to learn it right. Make things a whole lot easier.
I've been searching the net for small amps. I found this site that looks promising.
http://www.jazzstore.com/product/Fender-Mini-Deluxe-Amp/4010484 .
Its states its a Fender amp for $9.95. I was thinking this amp could be installed into any box to make the appropriate looking amp for about any application.
If its the real thing I dont think you can build an amp any cheaper plus the idea that its a FENDER amp which carries a lot of weight if your trying to sell the map.
Well, Roger, maybe I'm a sucker, but for that pirce I had ot order one and give it a try. I still will want to build one though, just to see it I can.

Thanks

Hey Guys, an UPDATE,
Regarding the Little Fender Amps I mentioned in an earlier post. Well I ordered 2 and I'm disappointed. Why am I disappointed? Because I didnt order several more and I should have.
These little amps are fantastic little gizmos.I paid $9.95 a piece and I couldnt be happier with what I got for the money.
The ad says they retail for $49.95 I believe and I can believe it.
If I can I'm going to order several more because I see no way I can build a cheaper amp.
This amp has volume, tone,DRIVE on/off switch 1/4 jack input. Powered by either 9volt OR adaptor for 120.What more can one ask for $9.95.
Boy am I glad to read that. I haven't tried mine yet, got to get a cord for it. I still want to build one, just to give it a try.
Paul, that amp comes with a 9 volt battery already in it.But you Do have to take the battery out and take off the protective plastic wrap for the battery to work.
Unwrap the batt plug in guitar , turn the amp on and yer jamminnnn.
The battery will work until you can get a cord.
