Im working on a build for someone out of a wine bottle box. The guys adamant about not covering the logo and just doesn't seem to understand where the bridge has to go based on the scale length.  Its a 12" long box and i wanted to use a fixed bridge but it covers the graphics and he wants it to have a neck thru with a tail.

My question is do you guys thing there will be enough string pressure across the bridge to prevent buzzing? It looks like it will be about 4 1/2" from bridge to strings coming up thru the tail? I dont have the bridge height yet but he wants me to use a oak draw pull as the bridge.

Hi Fantacone, my thought is just make the bridge high enough to get the best break angle to the tail, then adjust the neck angle to suit the action you want. I  often say, lay out a plan drawing before you start [side on view] its only a bunch of straight lines,so you can plan all this before you start. Saves a lot of "if's and buts" later.

Thanks, makes sense.

Del Puckett has an excellent video on a back anglè for the neck ŵhich not only give you 3°or so angle but it will çause the bridge to be higher therefore giving you enough down pull on the strings. BTW this is how I Will do my custom build's, I like the fact it gives you plenty of height by the bridge but the action is low on the frets.

Thanks, i use his back angle idea already. Works great.

Just a thought. If you was to use a fixed bridge or a movable bridge, would they not both sit in the same place on the top covering the  logo. Unless of course you changed the scale length or reposition the neck so as to move the bridge position. What about a clear Perspex bridge.

Taff

Ya your right, its just this guy dosnt want anything covering logo. Small floating bridge is best i can do

Mike

LOL Taff, isn't it past your bedtime down under? What if he was to make a tail piece? They don't need a bridge do they?

no, still need a bridge.

tail piece is just a different way of holding the end of the string. you still need a bridge to define the scale length.

Right, i should be able to put the neck in place snap a pic and show you what im talking about.

Whats the longest distance from string anchor point to bridge anyones built? Mine are 1" - 2"

Mike

Just had a weird idea. Why not use a violin like bridge and use the handle as a string guide to keep the strings in a lower position between the end piece and the bridge?

The thin bridge wouldn't obscure the label too much and the strings would hit it at a sharp enough angle to avoid problems. You could just drill a few holes in the handle to pass the strings through.

I do not know what you mean by "handle", where would you mount something that would change the angle behind the bridge. The thin bridge of a viiolin is held in an upright position by the steep angle of the strings on either side.

A very thin bridge may also focus downward pressure to a smaller area, how thick is the top.

Looks like the customer is more interested in looks rather than function. Use a clear plastic or Perspex bridge.

Taff

The handle comes from the fact that the person for whom this is getting built wants to use an old oak handle as the bridge.

Personally, I would just try and get it on there in some way to keep him happy. But if it was for me, the project wouldn't be held to strict standards like that as I tend to focus more on playability than looks.
