Greetings all! I'm going to start building canjo's and I have been collecting cans for a while. I am handicapped so I need to use power tools because I don't have the strength oin my hands to dull the edges of the metal running around the top of a can after the lid is removed.. What tool can I use to do that? I was thinking about using a draemel but I would like some advice on what wheel to use to Take the sharp edge of the can. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you all in advance and have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Where is they say in Scotland happy Hogmaney.

  • Hi Stuart, I just had to search canjos to see what we are talking about.

Just a thought, our electric can opener leaves a safe edge as it cuts, not sure about drink cans though.  Also if holding the tool is difficult, think about mounting the tool/machine and turning the can to file grind or burnish the edges. I'd adapt my drill press, or a file in a vise or a file clamped to the bench.

    • Taffy,

Thank you for the advice. I like the idea of the electric can opener

It is a good idea about turning the can against a file. I don't think I would have a problem holding a dremmel tool, the thing would be the physical action of filing itself, which is why I thought about using the dremmel but I was unsure which wheel to use.

I will try the idea of turning the can and see how that works, I can always go back to using the dremmel if turning the can doesn't work. I just don't have much strength in my hands and I have tremors so they can shake pretty badly and that is why I was thinking about a power tool. However I can probably do it with the file in A vice. Merry Christmas!

  • You could use any grinding stone, as long as it’s hard? Most people use a file?

    • Thank you Brian Q. Merry Christmas!
