recently bitten by the bug - while im waitng to build by cbg - got a simple and probably dumb question - I've never played the 6 string but always wanted to and like many have one sitting around collecting dust - While i am waiting on a cbg - can i just make my 6 sting a 3 string - tune to open g a go ? good idea or bad idea and best place to start to learn - playing some blues is my goal - any and all advice greatly appreciated many thanks

  • Yes you can! It's really easy to turn a six string into a three or four. I go with the 5th, 4th and 3rd string positions when doing it to my guitars. You also have the added bonus of being able to set the intonation right with your bridge. It will have to be redone if you change over to a three string.  

    As far as starting to play I'd start with single notes. On each string. Strum that single note with the other two strings. Find where on the neck they sound good for you. Then play with baring chords. this way you'll be on your way to combining both notes and chords. Makes playing a whole lot more fun. 

  • Yea, you can definitely turn that 6’er into a 3 stringer? Plenty of members have done so?  Keep the A,D,G strings for GDG tuning?
