Has anyone made the mandolin based on the plans found here, https://cigarboxnation.com/page/5-string-cigar-box-mandolin

I've been thinking about making both a cigar box mandolin and a normal mandolin, and I figured this would be a fun plan to follow, especially as a good applicant for the current build off contest.

So far I think I'm going to change the neck dimensions, since 2" seems really wide, I think 1.25"-1.75" would work better,  and I can't tell what the original has for a tailpiece, maybe just nails going into the end of the box?  In that case it would really need an end block, and honestly a neck block too.

And I'm not really sure what E on the plans represents.  Some kind of back brace?

I've got a nice antique box that is pretty close to the dimensions required, and I'll probably post my progress here or in a new thread.

  • Sam you can post pics straight into the discussion like this, sometimes links are not viewable to others?

Then you’ll have to click the HTML Editor before you click Add Reply? I know it’s confusing, but that’s how to make things work :)

  • Yea, seeing that is confusing, but in the other drawing, it specifies “e” as a block? Just like how most of us brace the corners in our cbg’s, so maybe that makes more sense? The other drawings don’t show a brace going across the body, but back bracing would benefit thinner boxes & improve sound? I think you could go either way with good results on this, good luck  :)

  • Sam, glitch doesn’t seem like it’s going away, so we gotta do this each time we post?
