This headstock trick is very closely related to how I untangle the wife's gold chains.
Get the foam core and some sewing pins, colored ball end works well, you can color code.
Have a seat in the comfy chair and prop the board comfortably, then just start working the chain. The secret is to not use any force, just keep exploring for loose chain and draw out or unwrap the tangle as they come along. If you pull a big loop, get another pin and pin it up out of the way.
Slow and steady does it , You'll be surprised how easy it is.
