A couple of questions

Its for $60 and I don't think it was originally a dobro. The guy says he bought the kit and then put it on the guitar a couple years ago. The kit is still fine so is the pick up but he says the rest of the guitar is falling a part. I was thinking about buying it and then putting the hardware on this sewing box i found for $3 at the salvation army. The box is really nicely crafted both exterior and interior with padding on the inside and two racks that flip out and can have the spools of sting put on.  I think the box is made entirely out of walnut and is about a half an inch or 3/4 inch thick. But the size is about the size of a standard acoustic guitar, more than big enough for the resonator kit.  But should I tear up the box? And do you guys think its worth it to buy the scrap guitar from this guy?

Also how do I go about getting the bridge off of my first CBG build without compromising the integrity of the box. I used standard wood glue to attach it to the box.

  • Hi Timothy,

Without seeing a photo of the guitar and hardware it is hard to comment on how good a deal it is.

I made a resonator out of a "proper" recycled cone and found it a real grind to do - soundwell, loads of bracing (so I could use 11 gauge strings for the reso sound) and a few months after building it the cone started to crumple.

also to fit the cone it needed a wide box and it felt like playing a suitcase - I hated the thing (just in case you missed the negative vibes)

Now the last build I made over this winter was again a reso but based on one of Old Lowe's cones http://www.cigarboxnation.com/profile/OldLowe?xg_source=profiles_me... the best $25 ever spent - a hole cut to size, no soundwell and strong enough for 6 strings- a joy to make and great to play.

The mini humbucker was from suntekstore.com is coil tappable and cost $6.11 http://www.suntekstore.com/goods-15006824-Humbucker+Pickup+for+Tele... (free delivery from Hong kong).  To amp up the saddle I used one of the bendable  piezo rods $3.59 http://www.suntekstore.com/goods-15005697-Bendable+Piezo+Cable+Unde...  Also I added a preamp off ebay (previous discussion http://www.cigarboxnation.com/group/class101/forum/topics/another-p...  The neck was a strat recycled one which cost £10 from ebay.

For $60 what parts are you hoping to reuse - if it is just the cone/cover and pickup I'd go for the Lowe cone every time.

Regarding the glued bridge - If the glue was capable of holding 6 strings at full tension I don't see how you can pull it away without damaging the lid finish.  Some of the others might have some ideas.  As an alternative is it possible to change the neck for a fretless plank  and use it for slide without adjusting the bridge?

    Regards,

    David

    • Thanks for all your input. Here is a link to the craigslist post. Its not much just a small picture but it looks legit. I am hoping that I might be able to salvage the neck probably the truss rod and maybe the fret board. I would like to get the dobro kit off of it which i know is worth more than $60 and then there is the machine heads and it sounds like the pick up are still good. just need to make a new body.

As for the neck of my first cbg, That neck is glued and screwed to the point where it could survive the zombie apocalypse and be used as a bludgeoning device. The bridge would be the easiest to replace.  I don't know if you saw my other post showing off my cbg but I would like to change the bridge to bring the strings closer to the fret board.
