I notice a lot of  folks here are 3string players.

I have a very nice 4 string box guitar, and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction as to tunings, books videos etc to learn to play the music, that is enjoyed on the 3 stringers except on a 4 string guitar.

I don't want to just remove a string and go the 3 string route

Any help, advice greatly appreciated

Ron H

  • You can also try the G7 tuning Shane recently posted about. G/D/F/B, it works real good.

  • Another thing to think about is DGBE tuning which is the first four strings of a six string standard tuning. I did this with my custom four string. Plays like an electric guitar. sounds like one too.

    • This also the tuning for a baritone ukulele, so chord shapes, songs, help for that instrument should apply to 4 string gitty tuned that way

    • I believe Shane's  and Ben's friend/guest-star AJ coined that as Arkansas tuning

      • my bad, EADG is Arkansas tuning, DGBE is Chicago tuning, d'oh

  • Thanks guys. I really appreciate your response

I'm going to go for it. You've been very helpful

    • No worries Ron. Enjoy the journey and I'll be looking forward to seeing the videos of your performances soon! It's highly addictive this music thing and the CBG is massive fun. You can take things as seriously as you want by learning in depth or just be happy with the one-finger chord songs put together by Glenn Watt et al. Nobody is going to judge you whichever way you decide to do things and that in itself is incredibly liberating and, for me, spurs me on to WANT to delve deeper.

Best of fortunes with it all.

  • Hi Ron.

I have the book by Brent Robitaille called "Cigar box guitar technique book" which has pretty much all the info for three and four string CBG tuned GDG or GDGB. It's packed with great stuff, chords, scales, riffs etc. Definitely recommend it.

For video I've purchased membership at learncigarboxguitar.com which has lessons for three and four string. Really helpful. Justin Johnson also does dvds for four string as do several others. There's another chap called Kenny Lee Burgess (I think that's his name?) who sells dvds on eBay for bottle neck, three and possibly four. Shane Speal has done some lessons on four string on YouTube too.

Best of fortunes finding what you're looking for but they're the ones that I've found helpful so far.

    Bear :)
