I am building a preamp into a cigar box that requires a 10 Watt power source, which seem to be difficult to come by here in the UK. The wording of the blurb that came with the preamp kit was that a power supply "of around 10 Watts" was required. Do you think I could get away with a 12 Watt DC adapter (the adapter I was looking at says it is 12V 1A, that's 12 Watts right?). All the best from Bill. :D

  • Thanks John, you've been a rock of late!
All the best from Bill. :D
  • a Watt is a measure of power... if the preamp takes 12V, then that adapter will work just fine...

So yes, 12V at 1A is 12W, but it won't always put out 12W.  It will put out 12V up to 1A... depending on what the preamp is pulling.

The real key is Voltage... too much and it fries the device, too little and nothing happens.

a 10W adapter could be 1volt at 10Amps!  so specifying Watts alone makes no sense to me.

  • Okay, I've found A 10 Watt adapter now, but I have a spare 12 Watt here and now, can I use it or is it best to go with the 10 Watt?
    • Should make no difference, assuming each puts out the right DC Voltage.

If the preamp calls for 12V, and both adapters are 12V DC, then I would try them both.  Some are noisy...
