whoops the fingerboard in the 2nd pic is blackwood sorry. And only one neck on that old double neck is merbau, the other is spotty gum (also decking, also from the hardware super mart with the green roof ;) )
J... If you pick through the merbau you can find some, maybe one piece in twenty, with bright gold flecks in the grain, this is a naturally occurring fungus in the tree. I've not had any in quite a while because I've a large stash of reclaimed merbau from a demolition, but when I used to buy it from the big b I'd always look for that gold fleck. Also you can very rarely find spectacularly figured pieces. I had an amazing one once but I gave it to Glenn Reither, still waiting to see the neck he gets from it. Make sure you pick right through that shit!
Be sure to look at the eucalypt decking too, red gum, forest gums and especially spotty gum, you'll often find really flamey bits. The gums can be a little more work, they're pre oiled and quite waxy but they make awesome finger boards, feel like ebony ones
Also, although the best action for cbgs at bunnings is def at the outdoor timber, do take a quick look at the kiln dried tassie oak inside the store as well, you can occasionally find a spectacular piece of skirting board or architrave too

'Malaysian Merbau' makes great necks. Can be quite hard on tools. Ive lammed up merbau decking many many times. Very nice, very stable, very strong :)
(a lot of mine have nail holes cos i recycle)
Looks great - thanks for your help. Think I'll give it a go.

Looks like a winner!
Thanks Richey....looks like I'll be using merbau on the next build!
