There is a small circuit board that is a DC motor speed control that the pot is connected to.  The motor has a gear speed reducer.  Both can be found on Ebay.  Cost with free shipping is about $20 if you shop carefully.  This one is about 600 rpm.  I have a 1000 rpm on order too.  Will decide which one to use from the two.  It is the gear drive that makes this workable.  Good speed control and plenty of torque even at low speed and start up which is what you need.

thats cool, what kind of motor is that? did you just hook that pot directly to it?
