I was just given a "vintage" (politically correct for old but of no value) Xacto kit, in it was a small block plane and what ever this is! The plane I'm good with, but this, don't have a clue! Don't know what it is, what to do with it or even What to feed it! All I can tell you it's made out of a hard plastic(bakelite). No blade in it or instructions. Any help?

Don't know why ebay sellers call it vintage, xacto sells them in a kit(but mine "is" old). I've narrowed it down to a spoke shave or a Balsa splitter. Either way don't know what blade or where to put it. Fired off a message to xacto, it'll be a month if ever before I hear anything!

Balsa Stripper.. this video shows how to use it..

All rights then! Thanks Tim. Wish I had this thing When I built RC scale tugboats, now it's just useless "vintage" junk! LOL appreciate the help! Mystery solved!!

not useless.. the guy said they are not made anymore.. might get more than a few bucks for it on ebay......

Xacto deluxe hobby set

Now they do. I was thinking about posting it, but there are several others already. It'll make an interesting paperweight or conversation piece. :-)

Hey Tim, thanks for posting that video, now I see how it works and what it's use is I can see a use for one in my repair shop. I'll be making one this weekend.

Taff.

Hi, like I said I had a use for this type of tool, I made it this arvo and it works fine. It stops the blade from following the grain.

I used a scrap.......oops, offcut piece of Jarrah [ don't have scrap timber in my shop ha ha] and some bits from past machines [ I cant throw anything away], the xacto knife I already had. By fitting a threaded adjusting screw I can vary the depth of the cut.

Another one to the collection. Thanks Will and Tim.

Cheers taff

LOL lm not allowed that many sharp objects! In fact I'm allowed a pencil to write with instead of crayons only when I'm under supervision! What type of wood were stripping?

With my model boat building days I'd use sheets of balsa or get a block is bass, cut it in thin slabs on my "vintage" hobby saw(kick my own ass for giving it away yrs ago). Then one side was painted flat black, cut into narrow strips, cut to uniform lengths with one end painted blk glued together(flip 90° so the blk was sandwiched against the unpainted side or end of the next piece).afterwards sanded down cut to shape and Walla! You have a wood plank deck for an old tugboat! The very thin blk lines accented the planks. If one felt really ambitious you'd before sanding take a needle tip dipped in blk paint and just barely make tw0 or three indentations on each end and if really really ambitious either in the midsection or thirds of each. So when sanded it looked like fasteners. A process that would make you crosseyed.

Stripping Sitka spruce Will.

Taff

Hi, Here are some strips being put to use to repair this spruce guitar top. Looks like I made this tool just in time. Now to do the final fit.

Cheers Taff

I'm glad that this lead to a useful tool for you Taff. If it wasn't for the video I wouldn't have had a clue what it was. You sure can cut some super thin strips with that baby.
