Putting a 3 string piezo rod between neck and box top.

Question is; Does the piezo rod actually touch the inside of the box top, or is there a bit of a space between the piezo and the inside of the box top. The piezo will plugged into a pre-amp unit.

Piezo rods work best under pressure. If you are putting it inside the box, it should be directly below the bridge, touching the lid and under some pressure...

Thanks John! I was pretty sure that what Shane did in his video about setting up a pre-amp but wasn't sure. I lucked out it looks like on where and how I placed it. Now to get onto finishing the neck and getting my first CBG done finally!

Yes, you need to have piezos firmly sandwiched in order to have them responsive to the vibrations in the instrument.
