On a CBG the main concern is neck stability. So one inch down or more is standard. On all my LPs the pickup is right below the neck because of all the extra wood holding the neck tension. Probably best to add extra wood to both sides of the neck wood in the body. All the way to the bridge. So when you cut for the pup your neck will not bow at the body.

Thanks, I have in my build plan to add extra bracing along each side and below the neck from the pickup to the bridge. From other posts I've deduced I've got to cut out some wood in the neck area for the pickup to sit in an adjust up and down as needed.

depends on the tone you are after.. close to the bridge is more treble, closer to the neck is warmer, less treble.  no rules put it where you want to..lol

Guitar companies position the pickups according to string nodes(position of high level vibration pitch).

Stability can be a factor in deciding where to place a pickup, but bracing can also help make those stability problems go away like Cause the Blue rat mentioned.

As Timothy Hunter explained, close to the bridge offers more treble - close to the neck offers more bass - middle position equals out the range(midrange).

Your choice according to what you like most. I've seen guitars with movable pickups to get any position wanted or you can have interactive electronics to mimic other pickup positions. More than one way to get what your after, just pick what you like.
