I got my new CBG done last night and I got to playing it, and man am I rusty!

Anyhow, I was going to tune to open G, but I could not get the top string to tune into G, I felt like I was going to snap it. So I went to my old, open D, so I tuned it DAD, using the top strings for a pack of six. Anyhow, when I strum the open D, on my guitar tuning app on my phone, I get A chord.  Why is that? is that because the A string is the root note? Not well rounded on music theory, so any help would be great, thanks, and if anyone can lead me to some good, one finger chords using the open D tuning, that would be awesome too. I am wanting to change up my  playing style and polish it a bit more, and mix in some sliding with some finger work.

chord shapes will be the same as Gdg. so that will make it easy. any of Glens one finger tutorials wil work on your guitat but instead of playing in G you will be playing in D. there is 5 frets difference. so in DAd tuning a GDg is on the 5th fret... if you wanted to play in G then capo at the 5th fret ...

I used the low E A and D string from a pack of six of ernie ball, the pink pack. Did I use the wrong strings for open G?  I also have my neck set up for around 25 inches, standard strat nut to bridge length, I just copied the frets from my strat style guitar onto my fret board.

I'm new to this too. I think it's important you use the correct strings coming out of a 6-string set. This is going to have an effect on your tuning.

It's the "4 Possible GDG Tunings" that have me stumped. Using my tuner, how am I supposed to know which one is low, mid, or high? How are you supposed to know that?

I haven't gotten my CBG yet, but I dread tuning this thing as I have no one around to help me figure it out, and I am new to tuned stringed instruments. I'm sure I'm going to have the same problems as you on tuning.

Do you have a Snark tuner? It might help a bit.

Do you have a smartphone?

Here's 5 tuner apps you can try:

http://www.bulletproofmusician.com/five-best-tuner-apps/

Whichever string you are tuning, provided you have the correct string for that note, an easy general rule is to tighten the string until it stops being floppy, and rings out a bit, from there, the next, a, b, c, d, or whatever you are seeking, should be the one you want as you tighten the string, in that " "just beyond floppy"  state, you are probably 2 or maybe 3 steps below the note you seek

So i'm still stumped on why when I tune to DAD, when I strum a open chord, it shows up as a A chord on my tuning app.  Also, I used the top 3 strings of a six string guitar pack. Is this open tuning, meant more for slide? or am I missing the one finger aspect? I would like to acutally play some kinda chord structure, but cant find the chords quit yet.  Also, what are those red dots on that chord chart? Are those root notes? So confused still.

So what guitar strings should I have used for open G tuning? I could replace a string if I had too. Im also having trouble finding lessons and chords for D tuning.

You are not alone. Know this, LOL.

At least you have your CBG. I'm still waiting for the guy who's building mine to finish it and ship it.

From every thing I read on these 3 strings...everybody does it differently...depending on:

• What other instruments they are being accompnaied by

• The sound they are going for - high or deep

• The volume they want - loud or soft.

This is what the guy building my CBG had to say:

"I use cbg southbound medium electric strings on my electric builds. You can replace them with a regular 6 string set using the top 3 strings for a lower tone or the 3 middle strings for a higher tone."

Also, what Darryl says above is great info...that I will use when tuning for my first time.

those strings should get you dad, i'm suspecting that when you play all 3 strings as a "chord" that the  a is dominating what your tuner is hearing, but that is just a guess, for open g, just use your a,d and g strings tuned g,d,g

Yup to what every one else has said. Don't strum all 3 strings and expect your tuner or tuner app to know which note it's s'posed to read. Tune one string at a time and your tuner will thank you. As already stated you need strings 5,4, and 3 from a 6 string pack for G,D,g tuning.

Your tuning app is responding to the A string, which, for scale lengths of 24.5 to 25.5 inches, tends to be a dominant resonating frequency on most guitars, even and especially, commercial ones.

Technically, 1-5-1 or 1-5-8 turnings like DAD or GDG are not chords. They are dyads, two notes sounded together. A proper chord is technically made up of 3 or more different notes sounded together. Others will argue with me, no doubt.

Jerry, have you played other stringed fretted instruments before? If not, then I can understand your confusion. But you really should take a little time to sit down, and map out your fretboard to understand the chord chart Timothy posted above. The red dots are, indeed, root notes.

You say above you used the E, A, and D from a standard 6-string set. You won't get to GDG that way for a 25 inch scale. You need the A, D, and G from a standard pack, and tune that A down to G.

Dyads shmyads! Durn technical mumbo jumbo, lol. The rest of the info is excellent though! Plus, there are those among us who would argue that 1,5,8 is actually 3 different notes: A440 and A220 may have the same alphabet name but a different frequency = a different note. Crap, more technical mumbo jumbo. It's really enough to know which strings to use for a certain tuning and where to put your fingers. (you know I'm just yankin' your chain Ron)
