"Commercial/Popular Songwriting"

Soon I will start posting some of the tips and insights about writings songs for the commercial market that I have learned along the way. Including what I learned while mentoring under Legendary Songwriter Jack Keller!  Most of what I'll be covering can be seen in the "How to Write a Song" section of   Songwriter Nation!   It all starts with the "Hook"!

Now this is "Commercially" speaking...but....if you don't have a Hook, you don't have a Song!!

The "Hook" is that memorable part of the song that the listener knows and can repeat after one hearing....it is almost always the title but in some cases not...regardless,"memorable" is the key word!

So that is your starting point for writing a "HIT SONG"!!

I am happy with the original song and tune, but the performance, especially the playing is still a work in progress.  Simple 'thumb style' seems to work best at this stage.

Very Nice Lyrics Uncle John....can't wait to hear what this sounds like!

Greg Brown must be the same guy I used to hear and love that sang a song called "Who'd a thunk it!"

The Iowa Waltz

Winter's not over threre, it always hangs on.

But soon all the snow and ice will be gone.

CHORUS:  And I dream of old days, they call me home.

They call me back to my Iowa home.

In April the geese fly and the cardinals sing.

There's nothing so fine as an Iowa spring.

Summer' s hot and it's humid and the corn grows so high.

Family and fireworks on the Fourth of July.

Fall is my favorite with a chill in the air.

Red leaves and football, I want to be there.

-----

As far as I know, Iowa does not have an official state waltz.  Greg Brown, a great song writer in eastern Iowa, has written a nice one.   I like the one above by mediocre song writer from western Iowa.  If I get where I can do it justice, I will make a video.

Sam and John, thank you for the kind comments.  I checked out John Wendell's page and the songs playing there.  Great, catchy country songs he and his wife Cyndea have written.  He is the real deal.

Sam, I have a cbg or two I should send to soldiers.  I need to get off my buns and do it.  I appreciate your efforts for soldiers, Sam.

Uncle John...thank you so much for your post..your song is great and your video too!!  The coincidence is unbelievable...just this morning I decided I was going to make a video of a tutorials blues that I had written once upon a time, with this great standard blues format that your song is in!!  Repeat your lines twice than a new line that rhymes!!  So I'll post that here also when I've done it!!   Thanks again..Great job!!
