I have been commissioned to build an 8 string cbg similar to the one in the following link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXLQLyVmqiI  I know who built that particular guitar but can any one tell me what instrument  it is possibly scaled to ?

I'm guessing a mandola which can vary quite a bit in scale length. Off the top of my head can be 16 to 21 inches. The voicing to me sounds like a mandola. I didn't care for the song per say but I liked the vid.

Don

I think Don is probably correct.

This is from Wikipedia.

"Mandolin-family luthiers producing an octave mandolin are more likely to use mandolin tuning machines and reproduce the details and styling of their American-style carved top mandolins. Some luthiers choose to
refer to their clearly bouzouki-style instruments as octave mandolins,
or even as mandocellos, despite the GDAD tuning. The octave mandolin is
usually regarded as having a shorter scale length than the Irish
bouzouki, in the vicinity of 20 to 23 inches (50 and 58.4cm), while the
scale length of the Irish bouzouki most often ranges from 23 to 25
inches (58.4 and 63.5cm). Some instruments have scales as long as 26 or
even 27 inches (66 to 68.7cm). These longer-scaled instruments are
generally acknowledged to possess greater volume, sustain, and tonal
richness but some players find the stretches involved in fingering too
difficult and so prefer shorter scale lengths."

I just finished my version of an Irish Bouzouki. I used a 25" scale.

Don, Thanks for the reply !  Now I have some direction to research this instrument. I kind of thought it may be related to the mando family but wasn't sure. I have to agree with you about the tune. I was trying to find out the type of instrument this was and reading some interveiws with this musician and learned he suffered the loss of a female companion and fellow bandmate recently . Thanks again for the reply - INK

Leroy, I thank you also for the reply and the information contained in it ! It should be very benificial to me to research and build this project. Also, let me say that Irish Bouzouki is one mighty fine looking instrument ! - INK

Yes, Very fine build Leroy. I would certainly be proud of that instrument.

Don

I don't know about scale length for an eight string mando type instrument, but here's a link to an 8 string resonator i've found. I think it's 27 in scale length.

When I build an 8 stringer it will be modeled after this.

Godzilla, Thanks for the input, dig the fat albert icon! Checked out the 8 string reso link. Pretty cool guitar looks like a handful ! Thinking about going with the 25" scale, seems to be some freedom to chose between a few different scale lengths depending on what you want to call the instrument. Good luck with that 8 stringer when ya get to it - INK

I found this quoted info: mandola." Its scale length is typically about 16.5 inches (420 mm). It is normally tuned like a viola: C-G-D-A. The octave mandolin (US and Canada), termed the octave mandola in Britain and Ireland and mandola in continental Europe, which is tuned an octave below the mandolin. Its scale length is typically about 20 inches (500 mm), although instruments with scales as short as 17 inches (430 mm) or as long as 21 inches (530 mm) are not unknown. In the vid. his chording is certainly mandolin style and I would guess it's very close to 20". seems longer than 16\http://www.elderly.com/accessories/cats/STMA.html for string sets.
David, Checked out the vid & the pic's . Pretty cool guitars ! I got a couple other similar projects in the works, just getting all the pieces and parts together. Thanks --- INK
