So I have a 3 part question, I guess.

1. What's the best way to design a custom pickguard

2. How do I cut said pickguard

3. I'm planning to use an old LP for the pickguard, any specific hints?

This is one of those projects I'm tackling now we're all in lockdown. I have a couple of instruments I'm working on.

One is a guitar companion to the Kay bass I have, but it has no original pickup, and someone hacked a couple of cavities into it and screwed in some Dender pickups. I have a nice pair of lipstick pickups, and want to make a fancy pickguard (plus we're in lockdown now, and I can sacrifice something). So there is no original pickguard design for this, as I need a pickguard that covers all the holes made in this poor machine.

The other is a custom bass I have, custom for someone else, I want to change the pickups on it, as it only has a jazz at the bridge, and is kind of weak sounding.

I don't have a router, I do have saws, jig saw, table saw, cheap-ass dremel knock-off, and so on. I've also seen people using a hot knife tool for vinyl, so wondered if I could cobble one together?

I suck at free hand art, which is the major thing keeping me back. Any clever software tools or template ideas, or whatever, gladly accepted.

for some reason my long post didn't come thru

You'll need a Dremel style multi-tool with a cut off wheel and a barrel sanding bit.

Make a template out of paper or thin poster board and use double sided tape to place it on the LP. Use the cut off wheel to cut majority of material away and use the sanding bit to finish. Add a bevel on the edge if wanted.

Practice on something else first and drill any holes using a strong blank piece of wood underneath.

I had a similar problem the other day, trying to make a long post, it took 3 or 4 attempts before it took so I once it worked I deleted the empty ones.

I wonder if that is what's happening for a bunch of people, because I keep getting notifications about people having posted a response, and then when I look there's nothing there.

I do have the cut-off and the barrel sanding wheel, don't know how many of my LP's I want to sacrifice, I may have a duplicate or two.

Not sure what I'll do here, trim the guard to fit round the bridge, and cover the whole area under the strings?

I want to keep the rockers, even though they aren't original, and currently aren't even wired up. Going to make my own janky 60's machine.

That's cool, has that old Teisco vibe.

I had like 10 notifications in my email that were all "Reply Deleted" and 1 email of your response. I would post a comment only to have a blank window, had to edit and rewrite. Now it's working.

Looks like the secret is just keep clicking the 'Add Reply' button, until it shows up.

The previous post with the pic took 4 attempts, and I deleted the blank ones.

Weird.

Actually, try clicking the editor from Visual Mode to HTML Editor and then back again, that seemed to fix the last reply.
