Thanks for the cuddle kitty, Nancy!
Denbo, a coal miner? Interesting. I am going to message you.
Dave, that is most interesting too. I looked up Athens, Ohio. Very close to West VA and not far from Kentucky. Thanks on the song. You have had an interesting life that is still full and interesting.
Thanks, Kale. If I could only keep one guitar, it would be that one. Comfy, plays easy. Loud enough to play with six stringers.
Fun little tune Unc. I like that sound of that 4 string.
I lived in coal country for 7 years teaching at Ohio University in Athens Ohio. After teaching for 3 years bought an old farm and tried self sufficiency farming. Strip mines and tortured timber was all around. Great music there. It was a magical place with wonderful characters everywhere. It transformed my musical soul. I befriended old coal miners who visited our farm often and played and sang their songs. Woodie Guthrie songs and the like. I found out what poverty was all about and raised a family in that tradition. I love your song Unc.
Thanks, AGP. That Mr. Peabody in the photo is the coal barron of Peabody coal.
People think of Iowa as an agricultural state - NOT a coal mining state. But up until the 1930 or so, coal mining was number two to farming for employment in Iowa. There were two coal mines within a mile of where I live. They are long gone and with no obvious residual evidence. I think they were owned or had close ties to local railroads not owned by the real Mr. Peabody.
The Iowa coal was somehow of a dirtier and lesser quality and was mostly used by the railroads and to heat homes and businesses. AGP, interesting that you, an Australian figured out the history of using the Peabody name in my song. In John Prine's song, Paradise, the town and nearby vicinity was hauled away by Mr. Peabody's coal train.
Dave, I am hard on harps- I must slobber a bit using a harness and they don't last long enough to make good ones worthwhile for me. I have some $10 Huang harps from China that last a long time. They take a bit more wind to play, but last and sound decent.
Thanks, Dave. I like this one.
I hear Woodie G. Here. Out of the Dustbowl Era.
