This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

Hello to All,

Hopefully I'm posting this introduction in the right place.  My introduction to CBGs was through a musician I greatly admire named Glenn Kaiser.  I discovered a video of Glenn jamming on this thing called a Cigar Box Guitar and before too long, I discovered a video of Glenn and a gentleman named Shane Speal having a jam session.  I absolutely had to have one of these Cigar Box Guitars!

I made my first (and to date only) CBG purchase in late 2015.  I'm still on a journey with my CBG... Still learning it and loving it.  I prefer to attempt to create original tunes, and I suspect any "beauty" would be in the ear of the beholder in this instance.  The "slow burn" of the Delta style blues inspires me most (I'm not a fast player), and I have a long way to go before I "get there".  That's okay; I'm simply enjoying the journey.

My occupation can sometimes be a bit stressful, and I've found that my CBG is a great outlet for expression and meditation on matters.  Shane recently shared in the "Main Room": "Try an' find Jesus on your own..."  When I'm playing my CBG, it's just me and Jesus - the Gift Giver of life and music - having a little one-on-one conversation.  That said, every time I have my CBG in hand is a treasured time.

I'm here to learn and glean within the CBG realm; a CBG truly is a wonderful and diverse instrument.  If any are on YouTube, I am under the moniker of Lamplight Liturgy... All there is basic and minimal... Just part of my simple journey.

Wishing All the best!

-Kent

This isn't making a lick of sense to me.  No idea how to play a guitar although I took a year or so of piano lessons as a kid, had an old Univox 12 string that I called myself going to learn to play a few centuries ago, several years ago did get to were I could plink around on a hog fiddle and have a banjo that I've been trying to sort out "Smoke on the Water on.

I'm retired and living up in the NW Tennessee sticks and for some reason, making a cigar box guitar and learning to play it has caught my attention.  I've been gathering up some bits and pieces from CB Gitty, digging through the old wood collection in my shop with an eye to making a fretless resonator 3 string out of some old red oak and birch plywood.  Mrs Willy collected up a bunch of cigar boxes a few years ago that have been gathering dust and there's a few big enough to stick a paint can lid in.

Somehow, I feel like I'm being led down a path.  Is there any hope?

this is Shane Speal's fault

yep I blame him for getting me started on this hobbie

sure CB Gitty and Puckett have been enablers but Shane started it

now I can barely get into my shop to work on new ones

I spend all my money on tuner machine heads, strings and poplar for necks

now I have to get another job so I can pay for more parts

My name is Ken ...and I am addicted to building CBGs

this isn't CBG anonymous oops

Hi. My name is Stew from Perth Western Australia. I have built 5 CBGs and in the process of 2 builds. I have built over 20 guitars and bass guitars previously but have well and truly caught the 3 string bug.
Really enjoy this site and it has been a wealth of information to me.

Hi everyone, my name is John I was born in Newfoundland Canada. But I live in Mission B.C, Canada. I am new to CBG and I am looking forward to learning all I can about building 3 and 4 string Cigar Box Guitars. Hopefully I can make them sound like some of the guitars that are on this site. The one I am building right now has a dual pickup with two volumes and two tone. Then I have got to learn how to play them. So if anyone has ideas that they would like to share pls do thanks
