Consider Formica for cavity covers and pick guards. 4x8 sheets are as expensive as hell, but search Home Depot for "Formica Samples". 5"X7" pieces for 25 cents each....

Guess great minds think alike. I've picked up a stack of those for a lot of uses. Good price and good material. Colors are almost limitless.

Good idea?

Formica, amazing what they can do with paper?

Hi, I've used wood for both pickguards and cavity covers at times.

At the risk of sounding dumber than a rock, I got pick guard, what the hell is a "cavity cover"? Nice job BTW!

My top picture shows a cavity in a solidbody electric guitar that houses the electrics, with a wood cover.

BrianQ's pic shows a cavity cover that does the same job on the front of the guitar.

Good grief Charlie Brown! The cut out in a "solid" body for electronics, duh! I never even gave that concept a thought(solid body). Talk about feeling stupid! Kept thinking to myself the whole guitar body is a giant cavity is there something I'm missing? When I read "solid body" in your comment I realized it was brain function! :-) what an idiot!

Thanks Taff. LOL

Ha ha Will, just to confuse you more, that solid body guitar ain't what it seems, it has chambers routed out throughout the body, so really it's about 40% hollow 60% solid.

We live and learn.

Taff

Just can't leave it alone can you?:-)

On solid bodies. do the cavities have any effect on tone at all?

Hi James, I used the chambers on most of my guitars to make them lighter. Some of the fancy grain timbers used for the top of the solid body guitar are pretty dense, so make the guitar too heavy for some players....like me.

When clambering a body you  are also changing the density of the timber, so its effect and reaction to string vibration could effect tone and sustain.

Taff

While you're at it pick up some of the Corian samples for nuts. Smells a lot less revolting than bone when being shaped
