Curious to hear how yall shape your necks?  I usually use the bandsaw to get a rough shape, then smooth it out on the sander.  I would use hand tools, but have wrist problems.  Any router users out there (table or hand held router)?

Wow, I’ve now watched several of his videos! He chiseled rasped out that neck in 5 to 10 mins with great accuracy, lots to learn from his techniques!

(Sharp chisel a must!)

I use a 4 in hand rasp, orbital sander, random orbit sander, and sandpaper. Till it feels nice.

I do exactly what Brown Water Jerry does.

First: I use an inexpensive wood rasp to to the basic shaping and removal of big amounts of wood.

Second: I used a 5" #50 sanding disk in my corded drill. That really removes a lot of material quickly and allows you to shape the neck. I like a traditional rounded neck. Be sure to wear a dusk mask when doing this.

Third: I use a 1" wide sanding strip (actually a 1" belt sander belt turned inside out) to loop over the neck and sand back and forth (sort of like buffing shoes with a towel). I use a 100 grit belt. This method makes the rounded neck actually round.

Fourth: I use a vibrating palm sander to removed all the sanding marks from prior operations.

Final step is hand sanding with 150 grit.

This is a really fast method to fully round a neck and make it smooooooooooth. Application of the finish of your choice and you have a nice, professional looking and feeling neck without a lot of sweat.

Why sand when you can remove most of it with a Chisel?

Well, Sweet, I guess you could. Michael Angelo use a chisel to create great statues.

Nothing wrong with Sanding. I do it.

Chisel  = No dust, Fast removal... but chisels have to be really sharp

and because of that you have to be really really careful.

Check out the video I linked.

give it to my dog.

actually, the orbital sander is my paintbrush.

made me laugh :-)

These cost $60-$80 but you will not be disappointed they do all the work except the 220 sanding. They are easy to use and are fast.

I use a mini sanding drum on my dremel until it looks and feels smooth.  I don't always do the half moon thing, I let the wood decide; sometimes it is a curvy square.

I use a Y handled vegetable peeler. The kiwi brand from Thailand is my favorite. The ones from Ikea and Kmart are also good.

I then finish off with a random orbit sander.
