I have been building these fun little stringbuddies for a fjew years now Here at BCB.
But for the first time i had to docter one of my favorit players, cose the Top string tended to run off while in high gear playing, becouse of the strait head i came up whit solution no 1 in the picture on the left. in the middel one ,the headstock is angled so the string problem was whit the tuning of the strings while the pressure on the tuners got to high so i plased a pin for tension release guidens. And the therd(3) is my favorite the slotted headstock gives me the most smooth playing and durable use of my crafted instrument, what is your exspirience consurning the Headstock Toppic?

I’m a fan of the straight headstock the Tassie Oak I use is great easy as pie to work and I do agree with you AD the slotted head style gives a nice thicker platform and string tension doesn’t seem to bother it . I always set my necks up with the recurve so when the strings tightened there’s no bow in them ,Digging all your guittys mate , Black Cat Bone should be in every home the world would be a much nicer place .
Hey Andries.
I bought the taper jig years ago from Harbor Freight tools (was probably $10 or so . . . but I don't think they stock them these days). I have some carpenter's squares too, but for scarfs I like this better (mostly because the adjustment pieces have a degree scale on them . . . though you can't see them in the photo)
Really, a person could probably make one from a couple pieces of scrap and a wingnut.
Lots of cool jig plans out there . . . especially for tablesaw
Looks profesional Blind Doughboy ,that mesuring jig ,did you make it? if use them to but i got these carpenters angle squares, i have tree a standerd Hook ,slanted, and a ajusteble one you can positionin any angle olmost like yours but differend constructed ,i have no picture yet, if you like i can make on and post it to you ? Thanks for your comments ! Greeeettsszz A.D.
I generally use a 12-degree angle (scarf joint) on my headstocks. Usually add wings, shape, and drill the pegholes.
The scarf for the angled headstock is simplicity itself, assuming you have a table saw and a taper jig (about $25 on Amakazon). Cutting a scarf to perfect size, in this manner, will take you roughly 2 minutes
For a time i done the from one piece necks from oak wood a slight slant and a hole lot of shaving, for a looker i think they are still the best but for practical and playebillety sturdines and easy to make whit limited tools i like the strait center hollow tree & Four Mahogany whit a separate hardwood fretboard or fretless, floor tile wood i like the best hard surface, no need for lacker, just a good rubb whit furniture Wax, it stains to if you like !
Thanks for the input UJ ,doing it fast and easy is usaly my challenge but now and then i like to spend more time on a project, just because its not allways fun to do it quicky!
Good topic and info, Andries. Glad I found it. I admire a nice scarf joint, but like for Derek, they have been more difficult and time consuming than I want. Add frustrating to that list.
Also, I admire the highly crafted gits, but I want my own to be poor man's gits that look like they could have been made in bit of a hurry and with limited resources. Made On Saturday to play Saturday night. The straight head stock fits that better.
I have always gone with 12 degree angle. I have built straight necks but the angle helps with string buzz and tuning and no string trees.. A scarf jig is easy to make. Whateve style you build it's a good idea to get between get around 12 degree angle even with a straight neck.
