Thanks Ron. I eventually used some of the oak for a neck support on my tricone resonator guitar build I finished recently .Not sure if I've got enough of it left for the lapsteel now but I appreciate the help and advice.

Great looking build you've just posted. You said it's acoustic so is that a little similar to a dulcimer? Looks great anyway.

Answer for Slo Blues Dani Y Ol' Grey Bear.   I am in the process of a double neck lap also.  Your 1 1/2" oak should do just fine.  The several I have built  are of 1' Ash, some with an added sound box.  Absolutely no noticeable issues.  Even made a couple from 2x4 pine and they work great.  I use mostly C6 and DADF#AD tuning.  Terrific tutorial on C6 from joedocmusic.com,  Very comprehensive and EASY  to follow with tab and demo nearly measure by measure.  Extremely well put together tutorial for very reasonable price.

this is my 90th guitar, 8 of them have been lap steels, still experimenting for acoustic effects.  this one is getting closer to my vision.  Hollow body ash with top sound holes.  It is similar to an earlier build for a client but with much better acoustic sound. Tuned to E I am quite happy with this.

Hi folks.

I want to try my hand at a double neck lapsteel guitar. It will probably  (not set in stone yet) be a 4 string and a six string, though this may become a six string and eight string as I think about it a little more.

My question is in relation to thickness needed for the string tension on the body of the instrument. I have a piece of solid oak that measures 39 inches long by 5.75 inches wide by 2.5 inches deep. If I try and cut the board to measure two pieces at 39 inches by 5.75 inches by 1.25 inches (roughly) would that take the tension from the strings?

If the answer is a resounding "no", would I be better mounting it on to some 20mm hardwood ply sheeting? Perhaps all it will need is a truss rod under each "neck"? Two truss rods under each? What would the experienced builders amongst you recommend?

Thanks for your help and best regards to you all.

Thank you slow blues dani & ol' grey bear,
I think I put my question in the comment section by accident but thank you ...seems like a case by case basis...

Hey Jon. I'm no expert and I don't have an exact answer to your question but on the lapsteel I built it was a case of chiselling out until the thickness was right to take the tuners I had and was using. I think it's as you suspect and just a case of individual basis. I could be wrong though.

I know this is sort of a generalized question but with lap steel head stocks both with sideway mounted tuners...
What is the thickness of the tuner headstock area?
I used some grovers once and had either too much or too little wood in that tuner area...I know tuners vary so I realize the answer may be varied. Thank you
