Hi Dani/Grey Bear, My latest project, which has unseated all my other planned projects for a bit is made up of the remnants from this little weapon. A fairly non-descript 'Spanish' thing, I had sort of tuned it and played a few chords a couple of weeks before this got sat on. The neck is proving to be a hassle, but I am getting there, currently veneering the reduced machine head in multi coloured veneers. This is first time I have used veneers, and it ain't easy I can tell you, but nothing ventured etc etc.... the tin is going to be the sound box, but it has an internally fitted lid, so again I have bitten the bullet and suffer as a result....
Hey Dennis.
Good idea. Never thought of trying to buy my donor guitars privately. Quite often in my local Cash Generator they'll have a piece of junk guitar for £30 which I'll buy for parts. Actually, the tricone resonator I'm currently finishing off has a neck from a 3/4 electric guitar and the 24" neck is perfect for a) my current reach abilities on the neck and b) keeping the string pressure down for the hand spun resonator cones not to implode.
I might try your idea of seeking out guitars on the private market. After all, £20 is much better than £30 when paying out!
For amps I find eBay is great for picking up second hand amps cheaply - too big to post so the limited "local pick up" interest results in low prices.
I have found some great buys from Facebook marketplace -
Guitar books unused and a quarter of the new price.
Hard case good used condition would have happily paid more.
Schecter guitar paid half the used prices this model sells for on eBay.
You can set the distance you want searched from your location. The only small issue is the the location of the seller is approximate (and sometimes miles out) so you need to check when you contact the seller.
I bought a VOX mini5 a couple of months ago, and it's brilliant.
Plenty loud enough for smallish gigs, busking etc with a great range of beats, rhythms and effects. You can also switch between 0.1w, 1.5w and 5w outputs so plenty of flexibility.
No worries Dennis. When I did my radio cassette amp I just unscrewed and removed the wires from the the tape head and wired an output jack to these now bare wires. The benefits I found from doing it this way is I still had a working selector switch which meant I had a portable radio to take on picnics etc and when I wanted to play guitar I just press play on the tape deck and stop to turn the power off.
All the best with doing yours and I hope you do a video demo when you're done?
Bear :0)
You can have my radio cassette amp for free if you want it, Dennis. I can post it Saturday to you. I've got my small Vox one anyway and my sister-in-law, brother-in-law and my family are putting together to buy me a tube amp for Christmas too. No strings or catches and I'll pay postage too. I've been the recipient of extreme generosity on CBN in the past and these good acts should be passed along.
Just message me any address you'd like it sent to if you want it. Doesn't need to be your address either, just an address you can get it from.
Bear
I have a hacked radio cassette player, Dennis. Really easy to just wire up a jack to the tape head wires. You're right though, those radios can sound epic and I love mine.
Hey Reg. Those Pignose amps are great. I had a Hog 20 and loved the thing. Gnarly! For those interested in the Pignose amps, ChickenboneJohn has them on his website, I believe. Save money on import duty and buy from the man hisself!
I tend to use a small Pignose myself. It seems to thrive with the right amount of distortion to make any CBG sound excellent..... lord knows what size it is wattage wise...!!!!
I'm getting an inferiority complex with my tiny 5 watts over here. Drooling over all this talk of amps. I'd be a right tech 'ead if I knew anything about tech.
Hi Dennis,
I have the vox 30W version. Got it for around £20 off eBay because the top of the cabinet had been replaced and it kept cutting out. Took the gamble - found on the internet that this model has the valve inserted upside down and tends to work loose. Took it apart and sure enough it just needed a block of wood removed (supposed to centre the valve but was pushing it sideways unseating it) and haven't had a problem since.
Great range of sounds - best £20 spent so far.
