StringTalk!

Had a intervieuw This afternoon whit Roman ZAJICEK "Rozawood Guitars"Tsjechie.

He is a Master Luthier maybee the Best there is in Europe,from the Old school Builders.

There was a Workshop at The Fellowship of Acoustics near my hometown in Dedemsvaart Holland.

In the intervieuw we talk on topics like strings,Woods,dobro's, that past ,while we where at the workshop in the Vintage & rare guitar store from Rudi Bults The Fellowschip of Acoustics in Dedemsvaart,Holland.

His guitars have a distinctif sound that have no comparance whit standaard American or other Europian Guitars.So i started of asking him about strings, myself i am having some resevations on the choice of strings,i dont think it has to do whit what brand, but more what strings u use for what sound on what instrument, like you have the Lapsteel ;it uses thick and smooth strings, but i can not use those on my Dobro,and  big roundwounds sound to rambling  to my ear.

The other Day i broke a string on my long time set of Martins&co "Silk&Steel", who i like on my Dobro and some of my own builds,Seeing a Video by "Roy Rodgers"years ago he recomended them and i stuck whit that for years,but now they where out of sale and i had to make do whit "Martins& co"Vintage, whits  i find not that swell to my ears, and when i quot BrianQ on this when he remarked me on a Ry Cooder Quot : that he liked his strings for slide to be flat & stail for optimum sliding.While de same set (i bothTwo) sounds a millioen on my Susuki "Nagoya"est 1885 .And like on my Favorit CBG Slider i have a Ernie Ball Set 008 from ADGB,sounding whit a humbucker pickup mind you superbo,So what do you think is the consensus on this ;

Thick or Thin? Flatwound or Roundwound? copperwound or silverwound? cheap or exspencif?

Is there any theory on this ? and what are your exspirience?

Thats why i use a dremel whit a small HSS metal bit!  and for playing the 008 - the 009 are fine the ernie balls electric are verry strong & flexeble but for slide i find that the 011  polish steel can take the presior more when changing open tunings  and the tone stay's longer in the cone when sliding.

I used to use the 9 gauge strings(custom lights .009-.042) and had problems breaking that .009 high E string all the time, guess I was just too hard on it. I switched to the D'Addario XL Regular Light 10/13/17/26/36/46(10's) long ago and haven't broke one of those. The bigger strings feel better on my finger tips and they don't seem to be as overly bright/thin as the smaller gauge to me anyway.

I've been wanting some flatwound strings for a couple gits, but the prices kept me away. I'll get a few eventually, the LaBella strings are available for reasonable prices these days.

I bought a set of small files at a discount tool place that had some small rat tail files just small enough to do tuner holes, but you have to be careful because small cheap files break off easy. Usually they break off inside the tuner holes. Haha

Tuner qualety is a isseu i tend to solve most problems whit grease ,oil, rust disolvent, but there are loads of bad tuners out there the ones whit shiny turning grips that break of at the stem and leave you standing whit this piece of crap in your hand. and in the end i change the 009 for a 011 and all the problems are gone !! Thanks for your contibution Paul ! appriciated !

You don't want to tune more than 4 steps above or below what a string is made for. You get too much tension and they break easy or too loose and floppy to play.

I had a set of tuners with sharp edges at the string hole before. Also check for sharp areas and binding at the nut, but sounds like tuner problem to me.

Im going treu them ROTO Sounds like a knife treu butter ,they snap easely and break at the tuners all the time going whit a other tuning EBEG not so much tension ,seems to be the solution for the new Rezzo !  But its good its a pack for 12 string cose the go fast not a recomender ! will take the edge of them tuner holes aswell !!

Rotosound was the British Invasion string, they all used em’? They also make good flatwounds if you like a heavier gauge (52-12). I like the rotosound  Bass strings, they’re quite nice sounding,premium price tho?
