Hi, I'm HazelFyrebird, and I'm a wannabe luthier (I feel like I'm standing up at a Builder's Anonymous meeting...) in Virginia. I'm a bit of a lurker, as I've been reading and reading for a while,…Continue

This is not so much of a reintroduction as a rebirth so to speak. I joined Cigar Box Nation many, many years ago when I initially developed an interest in more "primitive" instruments, CBGs, mountain…Continue

Yea, no kiddin! I'm in Rogersville. About 45 min away.
For anyone on Minds (an alternative to Facebook) I started a group, for Cigar Box Guitar players.
You do have to join "Minds" to be a part of it. Not a big deal though. (No $)
I am from Tennessee, in the Smokey Mountains. I Started playing guitar at 7, mostly blues. Through the years, I played mostly early punk and some blues. During the war, I became injured and stopped playing for several years, I'm playing again, with some difficulty. I am now primarily playing old school Punk on my guitar, and my variety of blues and rock on my CBG and Ukulele. I made my CBG with a Gitty kit, and love it. I am glad I did the humbucker. I will be building more kits!
Hello from the Smoky Mountains of East TN, I'm new to CBN and very happy to be included here.
My introductory build will be No.1 for me and I think I'll call it Romeo for obvious reasons.
I've had this box for a couple of years now and got it at a local smoke shop with the intent to build a guitar. The neck is a piece of poplar that was dunnage in a stack of lumber I got on a job. Watching build vids, I've been agonizing over getting a spoke shave, micro file and/or a shinto rasp, but remembered I had this old draw knife in a drawer, so I decided to give it a try and it ended up working pretty good. Good enough to use until I acquire some more finely edged tools anyway. I really like to put old tools int service and just got this beaut of a miter saw at a barn sale last weekend (for $20 bucks I might add!)
I measured out the frets with a metric tape measure and an extremely sharp pencil. This part ate up some time since I've never done it before. The plan is to cut in frets but I'll wait until my order from CB Gitty arrives before going anything further. Along with tuning pegs, bone nuts, prewired 3 string pick-up, I also ordered the fret saw, miter box and fret wire. Since I only guesstimated where the hundredths of a .mm were (Hey, I Did use my extra strength cheaters at least, hahaha) I went ahead and put the fret template sheet in my cart. I figure that will save me some time on my next build
So, I have about 5 hours in this so far and the basic box is together. I'm really happy with the fit, I haven't used any fasteners yet and it stays together even if I give it a good shake. I can open and close the lid which the neck will be attached to eventually and that all stays together too. As for the look, I wasn't too keen on the the box being upside down at first and thought I'd just paint or sticker it all up. And I did that due to the waterfall front edge of the lid, I figured that would feel better on the arm when playing which it does. But now that it's all together, I like it just fine.
