Lots of interesting facts about using cedar. It sure looks good Danny, that’s a great combination of red plate  and wood! Lynas slides always make it easier and this tone sounds  good!   The cedar body is tops!

Thanks AD I will definitely keep working it, Thanks Unc and Nancy. Unc I may have opened up a topic for debate on this one concerning the cedar neck

Comment by Danny Gordon on September 25, 2018 at 6:55pm

my necks are through the body and 3/4 inch out the back side. I spray 3 coats of clear lacquer on all parts after building, this neck is a little thinner than what I have used before but not much.

I have used cedar on all my builds and so far so good no warping no breaking (knock on wood)

I tried to research cedar for necks on the internet.  Varied info and that includes the fact that there are quite a few varieties of cedar and each with different properties.  One source said that cedar is sometimes used for nylon stringed guitars.  Generally speaking, a hard dense wood is used for factory made guitars.  Most often mahogany and maple are used.

Cedar is a soft wood.  But what is the CBG Rule?   No Rules!

Cedar is beautiful, Kirk.  I don't know the answer for sure, but anytime you laminate (add a finger board or through the neck heel) you add strength and rigidity.  Even if the finger board is soft, like a yard stick or lathe it adds those good things.  I would rather cut those 2x2s down for two necks and add the laminations.

This topic might be good for the forum.  You'd likely get someone more expert about it than I am.  Good wishes on the builds.

I'm only asking because a friend gave me some 2" x 2"'s of cedar that's just gorgeous.  I was hoping to make a fretless build with one of them.  I might have to do a 3 piece neck or something, if it's too soft.

On the cedar topic, cedar makes good tops  - a great tone wood.  Canadian guitar maker, Seagull, makes a lot of cedar tops.  On the down side of those, the tops get scratched up kind of easily if they don't have a thick and hard finish.

Kirk, I don't know for sure.  I think of cedar as being a bit flexible.  Does anyone else know?   Laminating it to the fretboard would stiffen and strengthen.

I was on a cheap build kick in August and built some with pine and glued up fretboard and through the box heel.  They seem good.
