Hi Cigarnationers...
Joined just today, been thinking about building my own license plate cigar box guitar for some time. Have decided on a 3 string, interested in other suggestions particularly around the pickup to use.
I'm a steel string acoustic singer / songwriter.
cheers

Welcome Tony
License plate guitar would be an excellent first git for sure, all depends on what sound and how much you want to put into it, I've yet to build my license plate git, waiting for a certain plate to tickle my fancy, but when I do mine, I might get a little crazy with a couple Seymore Duncan Humbuckers instead of just a 3 pole pickup, but that's a ways off for me, too many other projects to finish.
Be sure to post pics of your builds and progress, ask any questions.
Merry Christmas
Thanks Richard.
Just looked up the Seymore Duncan web site. If you go for that sort of pickup, do you get a smaller one for a 3 string cbg? Or just fit the full size one?
I'm after a blues sort of sound. Don't mind using a pedal of some sort to give extra boost / distortion if required. I don't play any electric so a bit unsure of myself in regards to the pickup. I've got a very good acoustic amp to play it through, or a full PA system. Plan to get smaller / portable amp once I have the cbg working.
Merry xmas to you and yours as well
plenty of 3 pole bluesy sounding pickups for sale on CBGitty and other sites, I was talking about a 6 pole mag pickup on a 3 string, for rock and blues, basically a modern sounding electric git with only 3 or 4 strings, haven't decided yet. My license plate git will more be for aesthetics than anything, mine will be a solid body, not like a lot of resonator plate git's.
No wrong way of doing it, hand made home made...NO RULES is out motto, and they're like Lay's potato chips, you can't have just one, so git to makin lol
If I fit a 6 pole mag pickup on a 3 string cbg, should the string spacing be aligned with any particular place on the pickup, like the diagram below?

I've seen it mounted normal and angled, me, I don't try to align the strings to the poles, I believe all the poles will pick up a certain amount of the vibration, of course, those directly above more so, but not sure how much more. Myself, I determine my string spacing based on how much room I want for my fingers, example, I build 1-1/2" necks, keeping the outer 2 strings approx 1/16-1/8" from the edge, and the middle string, well, in the middle lol. I also angle my pickup slightly, not trying to catch all the poles, but at least 4 of them underneath the 3 strings, others do something similar. Experiment maybe with a jig made from a 2x4 board and some strings, make an adjustable bridge mount where you can twist it at different angles to see if you can tell a difference, but doubt you'll notice much if any.
Here's how I did one.
Thanks, that's the sort of info I was after. Do you make your own amps? I saw a thread here on a boneafone amp but the links to it were gone / broken. I've got amp for bass and electric so not desperate but want to make my own and have some experience with soldering electronics.
I make porch amps, basically a small home made volume only control made from some eBay purchased 9v amp kits and speakers I've gathered from thrift shops.
Get yourself a good soldering iron or gun, I prefer the temp controlled guns like the ones made by Weller, roughly only $30 US. Not sure what your electrical requirements are where you live, so I assume that's a consideration when you buy.
I have less than $10 in any of the amps I've made. Speakers and all components included.
I have a monster amp at the house, but I really want a micro-cube, seems like an all around good portable yet good sounding amp for not a lot of money, and I won't have to try and build one to sound like it. Most of the homemade amps powered by battery need some help in the volume department, like a preamp or pedal.
Thanks, I've got a preamp I use for the acoustics that have static pickups in them. I built this using one of those temp controlled guns you speak of, needs quite a bit for the wires feeding the motors as they pull 20 or 30 amps and much smaller for the wires feeding the electronics. :-)

Where do you live?
Almost Heaven Wild and Wonderful WEST VIRGINIA USA
cool video, My mom had me pick up a fairly sizable drone for my 76yr old dad lol. Out in the middle of the woods ought to be cool flying it around
West Virginia. Nice. My 2nd youngest son moved to Boston last year. We went to their wedding in Vermont.
The drone I fly uses what's called FPV - first person view. That means I don't look at the. drone line of sight as you do with rc planes. It has a live video feed that displays in goggles that I wear which means the view I have while flying is the exact same view you saw in that video.
it's particularly immersive. When I first started flying FPV, I would duck when flying under low hanging branches even though those branches were a hundred or more metres away.
hahaha, too funny, kinda like ducking and dodging objects at a 3d movie theater, the one I got him doesn't have the FPV, not sure he'd want that, but does have the smart phone bracket and Bluetooth connection, I may have to get myself one, was wondering how you flew pretty accurate at that rate of speed.
Have fun with your first build. It can become very addictive but better than a bar bill. I’ve been liking the Mini Box Bucker guit pickup from MGB guitar. It is very flat, only about 1/4 inch tall. Perfect for surface mount on cigar boxes. Might be a problem on a steel plate. I’ve been using copper sheeting to cover mine. They sound great and are very reasonable priced.
