What's the strangest thing you've ever done to achieve a certain sound or effect?

This funny picture was posted on the CBN Facebook page this afternoon. It had a fan near/against an amp, with the caption, "Budget Tremolo." I found an unrelated video on YouTube, demonstrating this.

We know that certain gear, effects, etc can get expensive. My question is, what's the strangest thing you've ever done to achieve a certain sound of effect? I've even heard of folks shaking their guitars, and even the fake whammy bar.

Paul. I use a TS9 at full distortion with the output at unity gain. This goes into a POG 2. The signal then goes into a Dirty Little Secret. Make my guitar sound like Deep Purple's heavy distorted organ.

That'll work. I think Jon Lord was Deep Purple's MVP.

Omnichords, haven't seen any since the 90's. You strummed a length of metal strips that played a full chord while depressing a single chorded button with the other hand. Had a harp tone to it, but got nice and nasty with my little Marshall amp.

a quick little visit back to ruining a guitar, d'oh

There used to be a hilarious video on Youtube(can't seem to find it anymore) of an all girl punk band. The singer/guitarist decided to smash her guitar on the stage, and ends up tearing up the entire stage instead. The video goes on for over 10 minutes, guitar never breaks and she wears her shelf out trying. Hilarious.

I once stuck an iRig mic down inside our empty washing machine, to get a deep, thumping bass drum sound as I beat percussion with my hands on the metal lid...

record in a hospital stairwell to get killer reverb.  funny, the lower (and stinker) in the stairwell the better the reverb.

Styrofoam cup over a microphone to get a "vintage" style sound. Worked pretty well.

Many moons ago, I worked as a recording engineer. Had a band come in one time that wanted to record their lead vocals through a battery-powered megaphone. I could have worked some signal processing magic that would have emulated the sound, but there's nothing quite like the real thing!

Along the same lines: many years ago, I helped a friend record a winning entry in a sales contest. It was a parody of Springsten's "Pink Cadillac." I took a Shure SM 58, mounted on a boom, and pointed it towards the glass window af an internal hallway in his house that had tile floors and two heavy wooden doors at either end. He found one of those big plastic kiddie microphones with the internal coiled spring to emulate reverb, so I had him sing the whole song through that , inside the hallway. The kiddie mike reverb coupled with the delay and weird bounce patterns of the sound coming from the wood, glass and tile, plus his awesome voice, gave a huge, present, harmonically-rich reverb tone to the track. As I recall, he and his whole sales team plus spouses won a trip to Hawaii based on that performance. I got a case of beer for my efforts.
Hi, must have been over 50 years ago I did the cone shaped addition to a recording mike for effect. But some years ago I auditioned my Harley in a line up for suitable sound to back a didgeridoo player recording out in the bush. They picked the loudest, not mine, instead of the deepest musical sound, mine. Ha ha. But the ride to the spot was good. And I got a free CD.
Cheers Taff.
To my musician friends who need a use for wire coat hangers, look no further.
