Hello fellow CBG builders, I would like to show you all this cigarbox guitar my dad and I build in the last couple of months and tell you a bit about it. Maybe we can inspire you to build one, or maybe you have tips for us, just let us know what you think, we appriciate it! If you have any questions about my build just ask us.

Now about the build:

  • For the body I used an old wooden millitary box, which we had to saw in to a custom size, this box dates to some wher around the 50's so It allready had a nice, aged look to it, which I loved.
  • The neck I made out of a table leg, this was some kind of hard wood and provided great strenght which comes in handy when building a guitat neck. This definently was the hardest part of the build and took the most time. The neck we freted our self, The distances between the frets and the whole snare lenght I traced from a stratocaster,
  • The hardware is nothing special, I just went to the local guitarshop and bought the cheapest single coil, volume rocker and input that I could find, but when you cranck up the distortion you definently get that raw CBG sound and I definently do not consider changing it for a more expencive one. One notable thing about single coil is that I placed near the neck to get a warm sound, instead of placing it more towards the bridge (this would produce a more clean sound). Also I wanted my guitar to have a ruged apperance so instead of puting the white knob you get with the volume rocker on, I put an aged door lock on that my father had laying around.
  • Some other cool things I put on my guitar to give it some character are some old stickers. A couple of plates you would find in old cars (a citroen HZ chasis number plate on the top of the CBG and a land rover plate on the front). The lisence plate my father brought with him from the USA when he was there years ago, It doesn't add to the sound as its bolted on to the body and can't fibrate, it just looks cool.

I hope you all like it!

Greetings from the Netherlands,

Jack & Sam Vissers

looking mighty  fine  ........ except  ..  those  tuners  may  give  you  issues in the future   ,  they "mostly" should be   installed the other way  with the  gear wheel down.(left and right tuners  ).   open tuners  like  those  sometimes  pull   the shaft away  from the  gear   with string pressure  instaled   that  way  . and they  strip  or spinn  aor skip  .   you  can get away  with  it     with  most   newer    enclosed tuners  ,  but really  ,  the  default  direction  is    gear  down  .

you  may  be ok    ,  they  dont  all  fail  , (in-fact  some   vintage   mandos  etc   were  manufactured  like  that  ) .  and a  nice  straight  drill  hole   will  help  too  .  but   just  an  fyi  for   next time  preventative   measures  ,   or   for  what it's worth  .

  great   guitar  tho  .  great  dad.son project  .  ;-)

Yup found out I schould have placed them the other way around when I tuned it for the first time, but it works for now and I hope it doesn't break down. Thanks for pointing this out, didn't know about it.

Greetings

+1 for the volume control, and +1 for working with your father, I learned most of my best swear words this way from my own dad.
All the best from Bill. :D

I love it, has great character, especially the volume control. I will be searching out special bits, at local boot sales shortly.
I hope you and your dad had a great time building it, and I suspect it won't be too long before you both start another project.
Thanks for sharing your CBG with us.

Love the look, +++ for the door latch knob and the data plates.

From the pictures it doesn't look like the bridge is slanted to compensate for the lower strings reaction to being stretched down to the fret-board.  Is it and the pics are deceptive, or are you finding the low string notes drift sharp as you go up?

Hey, as english is not my native language I find it hard to understand your reply, what by mean with ''slanted'', ''deceptive'' and ''drift sharp''?

greetings

Ah oke I get it, but no i didn't do that on my cbg, no isseus with it so far.

you may want to use a tuner and check if all the frets are in tune...?

Thanks for all the nice reactions!

Looks like you did a great job, love the cool details like the vol knob too!

Looks like a great project that you guys did together. Nice job!
