Fellers and Ladies,

I am making a five string banjo and I want to use fiddle pegs to tune it.So I went to the store today and bought four pegs(all they had). When I had a chance to look at them they have no hole to run the string through. So how do you use them to tune with????

Thankyou for your knowledge.

Yeah Bobby they almost always come without holes since the hole placement on a fiddle depends on which string each peg is used for. Usually I wait until I've got the peg in place in the headstock and then mark where the hole should be and drill it with a 1/16" bit. You want to keep the hole pretty close to the side that the peg comes in on since you have to push and turn to tighten it. I'll try for a bigger picture.

Thanks. That is just what I was looking for.

I REALLY recommend getting a matched peg shaver and peg hole reamer.  the reason pegs work is the taper allows you to push inward and get a tight fit where the hardwood to harderwood contact is 100% giving the best friction grip against popping loose.

Yup, I agree totally with you JL. I made several instruments before finally getting the shaver/reamer.combo. A little costly but by then I knew I'd be using them a lot.

Here's the way I did it back before getting the right tools.

Thanks for the info.I am sure that you are right about the reamer and peg shaver.I know that the job would be done correct if I had them but on my budget it is not going to happen. My disabilty check is kinda small and we are still trying to get our bills to match our income. I am going to try to buy a round wood rasp in the right size to match the pegs.

After a three week wait I got my pegs from China.Four pegs for  $3.99 and free shipping.I don't know how they do it. I called around local and only one store had four at $3.50 a piece (budget again)...Still need one peg but I don't have that worked out yet

Hey Bobby, hopefully you checked out the vid I posted here earlier. Perfect solution for a limited budget. Shaped the pegs by hand and used some old broken scissors for a reamer. It works (sort of) One good thing is that a banjo with nylon strings or a ukulele put considerably less pull on the pegs and tailpiece than does a fiddle so you can get away with a less than perfect fit. Your idea of a round tapered file should work well also Here's an idea from a guy called smellyoldfatguy.

I fixed up an old ukulele with wooden pegs last year - just bought some violin pegs, wrapped the shafts with sandpaper and turned them in the holes until they matched (roughly). Seemed to work okay and held tuning well enough with nylon uke strings - may be an option if you're on a tight budget...

That is very good advice.I am a long way from the fitting but I will keep that in mind. There is almost always another way to get something done,I just have to find it. Of late I just come to this site.

Thanks
