So, I ditched my radial arm saw in favor of a 220v Delta cabinet saw... I already cut 8 new fretboards from a piece of $7 Jotoba from my local hardwood supplier... I couldn't be happier...
And with my Tax refund, I was going to treat myself to the Stew-Mac fret saw, miter box, and template... but then... I saw the circular saw blade... so... for LESS money than the miter box and saw, I could use my table saw...
So... with that, I'm looking to see if anybody here has that blade, has used it, and could comment on how well it works???

big box's,most company do kid.
its a case of one box fits all.
buying in bulk of one size is considerably cheaper to buy that having several different size box's.
it wont bother them coz we're paying for it.
I sell my stuff all over the world so I wrap them in good quality double skinned bubble wrap and black cling film.
my stuff are made of metal so I can do this.
for example to post a motorcycle rack Germany in a box would cost £40 plus box £8.00=£48 plus other cost say £3... make it £52 in total
bubble wrap etc £20 all in a different of £32! and the customer will have to pay that extra.
wrapping them up is time consuming but to put it in a box is done in a matter of minutes .
here everything has to be 2 kgs or under but once its over 2kgs then it comes under a different postage like parcelforce rather than royal mail even though its the same company ,this will start to go over the top.
recently I posted a backrest/rack to USA wrapped in bubble wrap .
it weighed 2.7kgs and cost £60 to post anf if it was boxed god knows.
You can buy blade stiffener disk that will cut down wobble.
I've used both my saw's inc band saw next to useless for getting 45 degrees cut every thing else its OK.
don't waste your money on expensive mitre box and saw. just buy a decent tenon saw(Irwin or similar)and a mitre box.
you can almost guarantee you'll pay more for the same tool with different labels from a guitar etc seller.
all very well if you intend to make it a business like cbjohn has if not then keep the cost as low as possible.
having said that don't buy cheap rubbish.
Most people agree that a fret slot saw is frightfully identical to a dovetail saw.
As a beginner I used a junior hacksaw.
So in typical fashion, I researched and researched. The closest thing I could find is a 6" saw that needs stiffeners... 2 sources, and I'd end up spending $75 anyway... So why not... I'm ordering the stew-mac saw, and template!
My first 32 builds (probably 1/2 fretted) I used my little HF Saw, miter box, and a template...
I have the table saw blade and I use it all the time with no issues. I have templates for the most common scale lengths and I can slot a fretboard in about 30 seconds. It is great if you are making a larger number of fretboards.
I do fretboards about 3 at a time and love just doing them by hand. The efficiency side of me wants to get the saw blade and jigs but the "this is a hobby idiot, it is supposed to take up your time" side reminds me that this is indeed a hobby for me so I stick to the miter box and hand saw and enjoy the process. A wise CBG'er once told me that the longer you do this the fewer power tools you'll use. I scoffed at his hillbilly sensibilities then discovered I actually do enjoy shaping wood by hand where applicable. I now use a rasp instead of a router, a hand saw where i can, and I have a fellow CBG'er who shall remain nameless but his initials are Wayfinder to thanks for it. So my vote is miter box unless you are a producer.
I'm not, but I've a few (10) I need to get done for friends all over the world... I'll never be a producer (until I retire) but I enjoy all aspects of the build except the fretboard. The way I see it, this will let me make 10-20 fretboards and leave them on the shelf until I need them... Like the 30 or so boxes I have stacked up...
You are right on the Zen part of it... I really enjoy using my spokeshave and hand sanding the neck. There's something satisfying about all those shavings.. I have a router, but it wasn't worth the mess and effort. . . I do dado the neck, as that part was a lot of work and heavy rasp work is hard on the bad shoulder... I found that a quick dado and I had some great results.
And yes, Wayfinder is wise... for a guy with CDO...
