Yeah $8 for a 1x2 piece of maple is a deal --- I can practice shaping - cutting nut slots - and drilling tuners on the maple before I work on the actual oak neck.

Sure - totally - but right now when it comes to CBGs or hard woods I don't know s*%t from shinola .... and I have this fully fretted oak neck from Gitty that I want to get mostly right when I build the actual CBG. So the maple 1x2 will give me a place to learn and practice on and screw up as needed to work some ideas out. I can see that building a neck from scratch is quite doable.

I did a lot of practicing on a few pieces of pine. Cheap scrap wood. I know it's soft. But it's also easier to damage. I've only made one neck. And that guitar is unplayable. My fault. I will someday rescue the Rusty Rat Box and make it playable again
