Could try a four hole door hinge, offset so three holes line up for strings, and the lowrr fourth hole bolt on a spoon or other contraption for tremolo arm. A pair of short springs sandwiched between the hinge would counteract the string tension.

do they really work door hinges??

I would like to see some pictures of how it is set up.

Me too. Was something I just imagined when Trapper said it didnt have to be pretty. I see the hinge as a tailpiece, laid open with the forward plate screwed down to the box top. Then fold the rear plate forward to "close" the hinge. Drill a  hole thru the end of a spoon handle and attach to the lower of the four hinge holes (of the moveable plate) and secure with short machine screw, lock washer and nut. Epoxy a small spring sandwiched between the two plates, and run your three strings thru the other 3 hinge plate holes...connect to tuning pegs, and SHAZAM!!!

once you've set it up do you press down or lift the spoon up?

seen a  wooden one on  here  before  ,   but  i  have tried many  times and cant find it again.

i've  made   non  bigsby style   whammys    out  of   drawer pulls ,   gate latches  , and  rat traps  .  they  give  more   of a "wowey"   effect  than   a  true  trem  ,, but are  fun  .

 

cant  find  my  rat trap  pic ;-(

these are stationary  .. no  springs  .. just  work  on  the  slight  movement when   pressure applied  . 

seem  to stay in tune better than  springers  ,,  but   have a shorter   arch  capacity  .

those are  repo   6ers  but    probably  adaptable   with some  work  .
