Hi, I'm struggling to find the best combination of strings for DAD tuning (which really suits my voice) I have tried several combinations with the use of a regular 4th, 5th and 6th string the best to date although the 6th tuned down to D does feel a tad slack....any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi,

Here is a (purely academic) answer:

http://soaresyguitars.org/AUG/STRING%20CHART%20A.jpg

but it gives a hint as to which gauge can be used to achieve a given tuning.

Thanks for the reply Serge, Guess I've been more focussed on what strings to use from a regular pack instead of what could be better achieved using the actual individual string gauges as a guide....food for thought indeed.

For what it is or isn't worth, I use the heaviest strings I can find for cbg's. Further, on most all my cbg guitars regardless of any other factors, acoustic strings sound best. I even mean without regard to tuning/pitch. My nickel. Enjoy the journey! -Glenn

Thanks for your reply Glen, I currently use the 4th, 5th and 6th from a regular heavy gauge pack of electrics so concur with your advice, but feel its very much like playing a bass at times so wondered what other options might be available to me....will give acoustic strings a go and see what difference they make

Firstly: what is your scale length? That will help determine which gauge strings to try.

Start by using phosphor bronze acoustic Mediums; if you're feeling brave, you could try a set of Heavies 0.013" - 0.056"

Thanks for your reply Ron, the scale length is 22" I assume the 013 would be a high E tuned down to D and the 056 the low E tuned down to a D, but would you then tune up the 3rd string to A or go with the 5th as the A?...like the idea of using the 1st and 6th tuned down to D and guess you would get the best of both worlds ie low bass and high melody lines......will certainly give it a go and try acoustic strings as advised by your self and Glenn

sorry for waiting so long to reply. i get the heavest string set i can get and use the bottom 4 strings in the pack in your case the E   tuned down to D the A the D(DAd) or (DAda)  the G tuned up to A
