Hey folks.  Thinking of building a CBG bass and I have a question or 2. Does it matter what kind of magnetic pickup I put in it?  I mean is there one specific for basses?  Also, does the 3 or 4…Continue

@jimmie bark

re: Acoustic vs. Electric bass strings

I all depends on what you like.

The acoustic strings are usuall phosphor/bronze and AFAIK all roundwounds.

There are many more choices available with electric bass strings. Electric strings come in flat, tape, ground (or semi-round), and round windings and are usually made out of steel or nickel metal (and their alloys) plus (more recently) chrome. There's also nylon tape wound over metal electric strings - plus the so-called 'coated' and 'plated' varieties. Each string type has it's own sound and feel.

My personal preference for a go-to electric bass string is: a nickel or nickle-coated roundwound in a medium (.45-.105) guage. I've found strings by DR, D'Addario, and SIT are all good. I like a smooth and rich bass sound, so  I'll usually use DR Sunbeams or SIT Rock Brights Nickel on most electric basses. I also use D'Addario EXP Reds (copper coated) on certain instruments when I want a real buttery sound.

For flatwounds, I currently prefer either the ridiculously expensive Tomastik-Infeld Jazz Bass Flats or the much more reasonably priced D'Addario Chromes. Both are good - and the Chromes are a little more versatile IMHO.

As far as nylon-tape wound strings go, I have yet to hear (or play) a set I think are worth spending money on. They just sound dead and unmelodious to my ears. YMMV.

Hope some of this is useful to you. Just take it with a grain of salt because my tastes may not run the same as yours.

Luck!

I hadn't even given any thought to Acoustic vs. Electric bass strings in my bass builds. I guess I have been using electric with both piezo disc pups and rod bridge pups. Any thoughts?

Yes, I built an upright bass from scrap wood and a cigar box.

Have any one build a upright bass guitar out of scrap material?

strings are Fender Nylon Tape Wound (steel inside and wrapped and rubbed tape outside)...comfortable, great for fretless bass, and can be used with magnetic pickups and/or piezos

What an excellent looking bass, Farmer Ted.

Awesome!  I didn't catch it, but are the strings steel or nylon?
