Following on to Diane's "sourdough" topic, I'm going to attach a "starter" project for Audacity. The project contains only a metronome count-in plus a simple timekeeping drum track, generated from the Hydrogen drum machine software.

Hydrogen is Linux only, but you don't need to run it to use existing drum tracks.

To add tracks to the project, unzip the attached file and point Audacity at the .aup file. You should be able to record new tracks while listening to the existing one(s).

Tres, it seems you saved the file in a Beta version of Audacity (1.3.5). The latest version of Audacity for the Mac is 1.2.5 and your file wouldn't open. I downloaded the beta version (1.3.9) and the track works well.

Ah, OK, good to know. That version is the "standard" one available for my Ubunut Linux box.

The real problem is that my instruments and recording gear are packed in boxes over at the new space and I have nothing here to play or record with except me and the laptop. I did come up with a soulful whistle riff & some jazzy tapping on the coffee table! Taxi even added a few background tweets. Feel free to delete those tracks.

I just downloaded your file: your two tracks come through fine.

A couple of questions. When uploading the file here does the data folder have to be included? I included it in the zipped folder I'm uploading.

Yes, the data folder has each track's actual audio in something like one second slices.

How do you adjust the volume for each individual track? The whistle track is too low and coffee table track too loud. HAAAAAAAAAAA

On the left of the track (in my version, anyway) are sliders for adjusting the gain for the track, as well as panning it right or left. The "Mute" and "Solo" buttons above the sliders silence either the current track or all the others.

You can also left-click on the track's control section (selecting the whole track) and apply the "Amplify" effect.

How do you strip the track of effects or a particular effect? I added a delay twice 'cause I couldn't see how to strip it off at first and can not undo the original one, I think, after I noticed UNDO in the Edit menu.

Hmm, on my version, I can undo nearly anything, including all the way back to the time I started Audacity (or created the project). I've been able to undo multiple effects, and then re-apply some of the undone ones later.

Can Audacity open a Garage Band file?

I don't know, but I doubt it. It can certainly import the .wav / .mp3 files which Garage Band exports.

All in all I did this just to get the ball rolling and to familiarize myself with Audacity while having a sandwich break. I can't wait to see what you guys who know what you're doing can achieve. Ted

Seems like you did fine, given the environment. I enjoyed hearing the whistle duet!

One more question, is it possible to save an Audacity file as an MP3? I tried Save as... and also Export, with no luck.

On my box, I have to install extra software to support MP3 format. The LAME encoder is available for both Mac and Windows; I think you just install it "along side" Audacity, following the directions on that page.
Anyone interested to pick this back up? Here's a quick rhythm part. It's not too clean, but this is a jam right?

I saved it as a compressed project because the one mono and one stereo track I added grew it quite a bit. The zip contains the project .aup and .ogg files, so the oggs could be pulled out and imported into any software that supports .ogg.
