Much depends on the type of music you'll play, but it's a bass you're making so I'd say go with E and A. You can play up the neck if need be but once you're down to the nut, that's it!
Hello friends......for a two string bass....what are the the best two strings to use out of the pack of four?..Thanks

Hi there Bruce Reich,
luckily there are lots of people who have built stand up basses and who have built cigar box fiddles. Some have successfully done both. All you need to do is to ask and I'm sur you will get all the answers that you will ever need. I never try to re-invent the wheel.
Hi, I'm new to the site, but not to the bass. I've played bass for 30+ yrs and have added most other string instruments along the way. I'm looking to build a 3/4 scale upright and a CB Fiddle(but that's another story & group). I always say "don't try to re-invent the wheel". I'd like to be able to ask questions of people who have "already been down this road".
Yeah, I've thought about that. Got some nice burlwood veneer pieces from a local joiner which, however, is quite thin...
