Neat Idea.,.,never seen diodes used this way.,,I have seen a single pot act as a blend / pan knob for a 2 pickup setup.,., love the use of kite string here.,.,cool build.,.,and now I see whats under that goldfoil cover .,.,xcellent.,.,!!

The one thing negative about this setup is a lack of hum cancellation when playing both pickups. That's a matter of taste though, some people prefer the non-parallel/hum cancelling sound with both pickups being played with their brighter tone.

Correct. It's a good way to go if you don't have room for a toggle switch, don't want one or don't have one and still be able to isolate the signal to just one pup at a time if wanted.

diodes are 'one way valves' for electricity, like a check-valve for water. 

it stops the bridge pickup's signal from going out of its pot and backwards into the neck pickup's pot.  otherwise both pots end up controlling the volume for both pickups at the same time and you can't turn one down without it also turning down the other one.
