Paradise ~ by the late, great John Prine. Played on a cool old beater of a six string that I re-glued, repaired and made into a tenor guitar. With Iowa Saxophone Inster Mental."Paradise" by John PrineWhen [D]I was a child my [G] family would [D]travelDown to Western Kentucky where my [A] parents were [D]bornAnd there's a backwards old town that's [G] often re[D]memberedSo many times that my [A] memories are [D] worn. And daddy won't you take me back to [G] Muhlenberg [D] County?Down by the Green River where [A] Paradise [D] lay.Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're [G] too late in [D] asking.Mister Peabody's coal train has [A] hauled it [D] away.Well, sometimes we'd travel right down the Green RiverTo the abandoned old prison down by Airdrie HillWhere the air smelled like snakes and we'd shoot with our pistolsBut empty pop bottles was all we would kill. [Chorus]Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovelAnd they tortured the timber and stripped all the landWell, they dug for their coal till the land was forsakenThen they wrote it all down as the progress of man. [Chorus]When I die let my ashes float down the Green RiverLet my soul roll on up to the Rochester damI'll be halfway to Heaven with Paradise waitin'Just five miles away from wherever I am. [Chorus]----If you want to do this with a slide on an open tuned guitar like a GDG,make the D open, the G at the 5th fret and the A at the 7th fret.

Yep! will do "UJ", I notice he recorded quite a few songs with Iris DeMent, but as yet still haven't looked at her Solo side, will also look further into Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark :-)
I am glad you are digging him, Alan. I have often been late in learning to like an artist or a style. For the most part, I didn't get into Townes Van Zandt or Guy Clark until after their deaths. But now I am a pretty big fan.
Thanks 'UJ' for alerting me to the Music of John Prine, I have now become a big fan of this recently departed Legend, have been all over Utube these past few days, listening to some of his 18 Studio Albums, at the moment I think I'm up to abt number 5, "Bruised Orange", and can honestly say, as yet, I haven't heard a Song I didn't like. :-)

Thanks, Rick. Good song and story. Needs a bunch of folks taking turns on verses and all singing the chorus.
A strong enthusiastic heartfelt singing and playing your love for JP! Superb John!

Make that JP.
AGP, search out UP diets with Iris Dement.

Thanks, Derek. It has its own personal yelp, but now that you mention it, it is kind of a dulcimer tone.
Good cover, John. Nice looking guitar, has a dulcimerish sound.
Thanks, Nancy and Ross.
