I recently unboxed this travel ukulele from Blue Sun Instruments. After playing it for a little bit, I realized a few simple mods would probably make it a lot more useful to me. So here is what I ended up with after a little bit of time in the workshop.

Intro - 0:00
List of Mods - 0:47
Acoustic vs Electric Volume - 3:49
Final Thoughts - 4:21

  • Thanks BrianQ. I hope the manufacturer takes note.

  • Yep, growing pains are common to start-up manufacturers, but you grew em right out :)

  • I figured Doug would be the first to respond. LOL. Thanks for checking it out. I think it will work out a lot better with the pickup and yes... I have numerous tiny amps. Thanks for the comments fellas.

  • Way Better ! pretty cool amped up Fuzz like, but beiing the DIY Genie you are i did exspex a rod whit wheels in there ,for the stings to optimum tune ,but like you say less is sometimes more ! sanding down must have done the trick ! Where is your next trip going? Leland Johnny's Hometown!?? or doing a "texas Hold em" play in a gambling House ?

  • Excellent job on the mods Kale! (Couldn’t leave it alone, could you?)I was wondering about the volume, by singing along you provided a good reference, so the pickup was essential. Do you have a small amp to travel with?

I have been thinking about my version of a travel Chugger, and have some ideas to test out when I get a chance. Your comments on tuner locations and drag on the strings with all the contact points have been factored in to my design. I will definitely put in a pickup.
