Written by David McWilliams (born 4th July 1945, died 8th January 2002) . A much underrated artist and songwriter. Just worked out hubcap version today, (4th July) as wee tribute to David. Just like to add a Happy 4th July to all my USA buddies :)The days of Pearly SpencerA tenement, a dirty street, walked and worn by shoeless feetInside it's long and so complete, watched by a shivering sunOld eyes in a small child's face, watching as the shadows raceThrough walls and cracks that leave no trace, and daylights brightness shunsThe days of Pearly SpencerThe race is almost runNose pressed hard on frosted glassGazing as the swollen massOn concrete fields where grows no grassStumbles blindly onIron trees smother the airBut withering they stand and stare ,through eyes that neither know nor care where the grass is goneThe days of Pearly SpencerThe race is almost runPearly where's your milk white skin? What's that stubble on your chin? It's buried in the rot gut ginYou played and lost, not wonYou played a house that can't be beatNow look your head's bowed in defeatYou walked too far along the street ,where only rats can runThe days of Pearly SpencerThe race is almost runThe days of Pearly SpencerThe race is almost run

  • very good, sir MacBlues

  • Might give it a go too, John, but challenging re vocals for me too. But hey,Unk, have another go yourself. If ya like it, sing it! :)
  • Yup.  I have tried to do it and failed badly.

  • Cheers, John :) That line you quote from "We've Got To Get Out Of This Place ", is so foreboding when written on its own! One of my favourites, and Eric Burdon had just right voice for it.
