I like to play home-made and self made instruments. But I also like to be able to play the factory made store boughts. Many of us agree that 4 strings are easier than 6 strings and that 3 strings are easier yet.But I started on six sting a bit over 20 years ago. A late start. And not a lot of talent. But, a lot of like to!I got this Martin guitar for Christmas, 2020 and made a goal to get better at playing a six and to learn a few old kind rock and roll standards. The goal was to be able to play four new standards and play them pretty well by my 71rst birthday, March 2.I worked on playing the six every day and on those old sorta rock and roll standards, 4 of them. I did not quite achieve that goal of playing them well by my birthday, but a week later, I am almost there. It's good to be this old and still getting better at something.I like this song about the same whether playing it on 4 or 6 strings. The intro sounds better to me on the lower strings of the six, but maybe that is because I have been practicing it that way for over 2 months.Video posting is a bit slow this early in the week, so I hope you don't mind me posting two vids and one of them being on a store bought.

  • Thanks, Dave.  Are you picking me up for the drive?  I have ten dollars gas money, a case of pork and beans and a 1977 Road Altlas.

Thanks, Andries.  Yup on my brown eyed girl.  And as for playing with my thumb on this one, it was really a matter of turning the camer on and realizing I had not picked up a pick.  I had been practicing the song with a pick.  Maybe better with out as the guitar volume might have been too much with the pick.

T- Belly, hope is immense.  If you work at it, you will improve.  You are already quite good.

  • I`m 61 later this month so there is hope for me yet!

  • the unwritten rule , about self made and made by others, is a stupid one to begin whit if you ask me but one shoud never limit ones self no matter what, but thats my opinion! but neverthe less its interesting to hear the diverens  between 6 and 4 , im not going to the way you atack your instrument , sins you play both in your usual manner ,meaning thumb wize,  your vocals on this one realy come alive like those exstra two strings open up a register of well sounding vocals uncle !! thanks and  you must love those brown eyes !

  • Great play and your vocal is awesome Unc. Sha La at Fest Unc.

  • LOL, Bob.  (on the old and still getting better - at at least one thing.)/   Thanks!

  • Again, a very good rendition Unc J.  Good to see and hear you playing that Martin (Very nice gits).  Good to keep setting a few goals I reckon.

"Old and still getting better"... priceless!!

  • Gracias, Derek, mi amigo.

  • Sounding good on the 6 John.

  • Alan, I have done mostly 3s and 4s this last ten or 12 years of the CBG 'revolution."

That's a good plus, James O.  And for that reason, I think more people would have success on six strings if they learned on 4s (ukes, tenor guitars) or 3s first.

  • Nice Martin Love to play all My guitars CBG's and factory guitars good job I often play just the first 4 strings very easy all chords can be played with just 2 fingers in Key of G
