  • To bemuzic: If you would like to explore this more, check out this book:

    Enjoy.

  • interesting stuff : -)

  • LOL No, I enjoy the opportunity to engage in these discussions. Yes, Buddhism has the theory of "No Self". There is no independent entity (soul).  Self and other are one. We create an illusion of separation. We base our preception of the world on our own unique perspective. The self is really just a collection of ideas, opinions, and experiences that develops over time. Life must come from life. You are half your Mother and half your Father. If you have children, they are half you and half your sexual partner. Your character lives on through those who experienced you in life. What happens after death in unknown. You need to experience it, in order to find out.

  • ha yes you're right it's the same question. I just exaggerated it to make the point!

I was thinking..... I believe I've heard you say that you're a Buddhist? From my very little knowledge of Buddism, I understand that within the Buddist way of thinking there is no "self" the self just being something the brain creates to make sense of the world. SO if you need a self to percieve the world and make it exist, but there is no self, does that mean nothing exists and we all disappear up our own a**es?!

Don't feel obliged to answer Keni..sounded like when you thanked me for the discussion, you were drawing a line under it, which is perhaps just as well as I've got a feeling it could be a never ending discussion!! (I was going to start on parallel universes!)

Anyway thanks for making me think on a grey English Wednesday. Having talked myself into the fact that there's a strong possibility that nothing exists I now feel a bit less stressed about Christmas, lol

  • Very challenging questions. "Did this planet not exist before there were any people on it to perceive it?" This is the same questions as...if a tree falls... If humans are not able to perceive it, how can there be reality? What makes something real? "Is the only reality the one we create with our brains?" Many would say, all Reality is in the mind. Possbly the problem is thinking that self and other are two separate things. Maybe one cannot exist without the other. They are interdependent. A mirror reflects an imagine of an object placed in front of it. Our minds function like mirrors. What you see in your mind, is not the actual item. It is an illusion. A picture created by your mind. We accept it as real. Again it gets back to the 3 requirements. You eat an apple...it turns into energy for your body...you eliminate the waste...it fertilizes the earth...a tree grows another apple. What is the reality of an apple? Thank you for this discussion.

  • at this point my brain is tied into a knot, lol!!

I have one more little question....did this planet not exist before there were any people on it to perceive it? Is the only reality the one we create with our brains? Well sorry that's two questions!

  • I would add the problem is with the question. If you are not there to hear it...how do you know it fell? Did you see it fall? Did you return to find a tree that was once standing is now down. See my point? Enjoy the conundrum. LOL

  • To bemuzic: LOL Its all good. Yes, if you close your eyes, you no longer have (sight) reality. Of course, you still have the others (ear,nose...). They are independent. If someone tells you, "Watch out you are going to trip". You "hear" this and then "feel" the object, but still there is no "sight" reality. Basically, the only reality we experience is "human" reality. It is defined by what we can preceive. We build machines to extend our range: microscopes, geiger counters, smoke detectors, etc, but still they are applied to our senses. All energy is matter and vise versa. It cannot be created or destroyed. It simply transforms into another state. A solid tree (matter) falling (a potential change in energy) hits the ground (matter) and is converted into sound waves (another potential energy) that travels through the air (matter) and hits your ear drum (matter/sense organ) causing it to vibrate. This is converted in your brain (sense organ) to a sound you recognize. You experience sound in your brain. If the 3 requirements are not met, no sound. Crazy.
