Shaping a 3 string Cigar Box Guitar neck with hand tools

My technique for shaping a 3 string CBG neck.
Tools used were rasps (14 & 28tpi), spokeshave, cross cut file, half round file and 60 grit fabric backed sandpaper.
This is at double speed. I hope someone gets some use out of it!

You just gotta love a spokeshave with that kind of history!  Excellent, my friend!

Cheers Maddog! That made me giggle RTZ. Not a brand name spokeshave. It was made by my great great grandfather and given to me by my grandpa. It holds an edge extremely well.

I think you need to lay off the caffeine Richey. What brand spokeshave is That?

Nicely done Richey! The labor of love ;-)

Thanks Gary and John! I still need to look at one of those four in hand rasps, they sound interesting. It would take something really special to convert me from my Continentals though! For me this is one of the most fun parts of a build, thanks for watching!

Richey - great video!  I'm more like Uncle John - breaking the edges more so than going full round on the neck.  Gotta admit, that the edge breaking varies from gitty to gitty, depending on how much rasping I feel like doing!  Well done - and thanks for playing it at double speed, so I feel even more like a slacker!  ;-)

Good one, Richie.

I don't try to get quite as nicely round as you do, but lately I have set aside the router and used a four in hand rasp -the less course round side- and end up with fairly quick and smooth necks.

Thanks guys. I realised that I spend a lot of time explain how to do these things, but showing is usually better. Jim - believe it or not I have shaped 8 necks with that spokeshave since the last time I sharpened it. It was made by my great great grandfather, they must have had very good quality steel back then!
