Easist & most versatile 3 string tuning.

Tuning big string to small string: DGB. The same as the DGB on a six string

G chord: open- nothing fretted.

C chord: index on the small string above the first fret and middle on the big string above the second fret.

D7 chord: index on small string above the first fret and middle on middle string above the 2nd fret.

D chord: middle on middle string above the 2nd fret and ring on the small string above the 3rd fret. (I mostly use the D7)

Em chord: any finger on the big string above the 2nd fret.

Am chord. Index on small string above the first fret.. And middle and ring on the other two strings above the second fret.

E chord: index on middle above the first fret. Middle on big string above the 2nd fret.

B7 chord: middle on the big string above the first fret and ring on the middle string on the middle string above the 2nd fret.

A chord: bar or fret all 3 strings above the 2nd fret

F chord: Index on the small string above the first fret, middle on the middle string above the 2nd fret and ring on the big string above the 3rd fret.

G chord Boogie Note: middle finger on the big string above the 2nd fret- do a four count strum and use the boogie note on the 3 count.

C chord boogie note. Make your C chord. Use a 4 count strum and on the 3 count, fret the middle string above the 2nd fret with your ring finger.

Well, Wes,  GDG is better with jumbalya.

Thanks, guys.  You that know it and like it, spread the word.  Those that don't know it, consider trying it.

Scruggy, read the text below the video.   This tuning is an open G as is GDg.   Both can be played with slide.  DGB is better for finger chords and you can play in any key.    GDg  or DAd (open D) are better for slide and considerably harder to finger chord.

DGB is easier and generally better for playing folk, Gospel, old timey, blue grass.   GDg and DAd are better for a lot of blues and rock.

Chord chart?   Look at a standard six string guitar or 5 string banjo chord chart.  Just use the DGB portion.   If someone can do even a few finger chords on standard six or banjo, it is an easier skill transfer.   For someone who has never finger chorded, playing in the key of G is easy to learn.  Open G chord.  Easy 2 finger C and D7 chords.  No long finger stretches!   Good for old or small hands.

Also with DGB, you can play a lot of minor chords with one to 3 fingers and no long finger stretches.

Plus DGB tastes better with chicken.

are most two finger chords apart from a few bar chords?

Comment by Scruggy on March 2, 2015 at 10:01am

so why everyone harping on about dgd tuning? or is that tuning good for slide and DGB better for easy fingering?

is there a chart for these chords somewhere?

Nice 'Uncle John', you are the Encyclopedia of CBG information.

Hey look!  It's why I like 5 string tuned GDgbd.  :)

GDg

Dgb

Dgbd

. . .

I'm just starting to figure out the Dgb 3-finger shapes and they are surprisingly easy to strum even with the G and d strings bracketing them.
