Uncle John, I am using a spoke shave...freshly sharpened and it works fantastic.  leaves a nice, relatively smooth surface, unlike the rasp that really chews the wood up.  I can hit it with the spoke shave and follow up with a sharp scraper and it reduces the sanding time to next to nothing.

This is a new Stanley spokeshave.  You can find them at the big box stores for about $17.00.  Just take the time sharpen it properly and it'll work great.

Good sharp tool.  Is that a spoke shave?   Seems to work good.  Yup, you said spoke shave.  I use a rasp and random orbital sander.  I may look at spoke shaves.   Thanks.
